Terry's father in court

London - The father of Chelsea captain John Terry has been accused of headbutting an Asian man outside a pub and hurling a racist insult at him in a dispute over a cigarette.

Edward Terry appeared in a court in London on Monday after being charged with racially aggravated common assault and racially aggravated fear or provocation of violence.

Prosecutors say Terry assaulted and verbally abused a man because he didn't offer him a cigarette, and then allegedly racially abused a cleaner at a railway station in central London on the same night.

Terry denies the charges.

John Terry, a former captain of England's national team, was banned for four matches in September 2012 for racially abusing an opponent during a Premier League game.
