Cape Town - Mario Balotelli has responded to the penalty snatching drama surrounding him after Thursday's 1-0 win over Besiktas.

Never far from controversy, the Italian striker made the headlines for not only sealing Liverpool's Europa League last 32 win but also for his part in the drama leading up to the decisive penalty.

Liverpool stalwart Steven Gerrard said "it's not nice to see when footballers are arguing" in response to the scenes leading up to Balotelli's match-winning spot-kick.

Balotelli was further blasted by Gerrard for being "disrespectful" and "a bit mischievous" by not allowing, captain on the night, Jordan Henderson to take the penalty. (Read the full Steven Gerrard story HERE!)

Balotelli has since "thanked' his teammate for "allowing" him to take the penalty and also called on fans to "stop the drama now".

Balotelli's Instagram response:

Balotelli has scored 27 of his 29 penalties for club and country throughout his career.
