Cape Town - Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling is tipping in-form winger Ashley Young to be recalled to the England squad.

Smalling believes that Young, who shone for Manchester United during Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, would be a welcome addition to the national squad.

Young has featured in his side's last 11 league games since being given an Old Trafford lifeline by manager Louis van Gaal and has appeared to have won over his manager and the club's fans with a number of brilliant displays down the left hand flank for the Red Devils.

"With his performances people will always be looking." Smalling told the Daily Mail.

"He was terrific. Every time he got it he looked like he was going to beat his man.

"He’s been a real threat the last few weeks. It could be a confidence thing and the manager showing faith in him.

"I think it’s the unpredictability he’s got. I think England could always do with a player like that and he’s been there before and I’m sure he won’t be far off."

Young has scored three goals and assisted five goals for Manchester United in the league this season.
