Shaw undergoes leg operation

Eindhoven - Manchester United says defender Luke Shaw has had surgery on his broken right leg and will remain in the Netherlands for the early stages of his rehabilitation.

Shaw broke his leg in two places in a tackle by PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno in the first half of a Champions League group game on Tuesday.

Moreno has since sent his best wishes as Shaw recovers from the double fracture.

United issued a short statement on Wednesday saying the England left back underwent an operation the night before, without saying how long Shaw is likely to be sidelined.

Shaw has been one of United's best players this season, after injury disrupted his first year at the club following a move from Southampton.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has slammed the tackle which left Shaw's season in tatters.
