Saints denied by West Brom

Southport - Southampton and West Bromwich Albion are still looking for their first wins in the fledgling Premier League season after an underwhelming goalless draw at St Mary's on Saturday.

After last week's opening loss to Liverpool, new Saints manager Ronald Koeman picked up his first point, but the hosts were unable to find their way past a stout West Brom defence.

Saints striker Dusan Tadic had the best chance of a mistake-riddled first half on 40 minutes, but was unable to rise over his marker to head the ball into a vacant net.

Koeman introduced his 12 million ($20 million, 15 million euros) signing Shane Long, the former Hull City striker who had come on for 15 minutes at Anfield last weekend, for the second half against one of his former clubs.

The second period was only minutes old when Koeman's opposite number Alan Irvine unleashed West Brom's record signing Brown Ideye, the Nigerian coming on for injured Victor Anichebe.

And Ideye, who joined Albion in a reported 10 million ($16 million) move from Dynamo Kiev, almost enjoyed a dream start with his first touch of the ball, meeting a cross at the back post, his header ending up in the side netting.

Southampton came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 70th minute with James Ward-Prowse's dipping free-kick flew past the wall before being stopped by West Brom 'keeper Ben Foster.
