Cape Town - Dutch striker, Robin van Persie, made his long awaited return from his ankle injury on Monday night as he played in Manchester United Under-21s' 1-1 draw at Leicester City.

According to the Manchester United website, Van Persie played for just over an hour in the club's Under-21 side fixture.

Louis van Gaal will have received mixed news on the game with Van Persie and Jonny Evans started their first fixture after lengthy spells on the sidelines but two young first team players were dealt injury blows.

Van Persie reportedly "looked sharp" and " fulfilled his defensive duties and worked hard" and was credited with an assist for his side's equaliser.

Manchester United defender Rafael was substituted in the first half after suffering a rib injuty while Adnan Januzaj "pulled up after chasing a ball down the right flank in the 54th minute and was unable to continue".

Centre-back Jonny Evans, making his return from suspension, played the entire game.
