RVP: I don't need surgery!

Cape Town - Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, who missed two months of club action at the end of last season due to a knee injury, has insisted that he should be considered fit and doesn't need surgery on his knee.

According to the Express, there has been speculation suggesting that United's last minute effort to sign Radamel Falcao was due to the club's concern about the long-term fitness of Van Persie.

The 31-year-old, who is set to play for Holland tonight in an international friendly against Italy, denies the rumours to be true.

"I am impressed that people can pick up the imagination to invent something like that," he said.

"I do not know where it comes from and can say with my hand on my heart that I won't be in a hospital to have the operation."

Van Persie now expects to have to fight with Falcao and Rooney for a starting position up front, but is pleased with the arrival of the Monaco striker.

"He makes us better," he said.

"At a top club you should always go for the best, which also fits my philosophy. Falcao must fight for his place, as I also have to.

"We must duke with Wayne Rooney and James Wilson to see who is playing."
