Player ratings: Arsenal v Liverpool

Cape Town - Sport24's Wade Pretorius rates the individuals after the 0-0 draw at the Emirates on Monday evening.

As it happened: Arsenal held at home

Neither side managed to do enough to win a closely-contested match as both goalkeepers shone despite the damp conditions in North London.

Christian Benteke missed Liverpool's best chance when his tap in was (almost miracously) saved by Petr Cech while Aaron Ramsey's first half effort was (in my view) incorrectly ruled offside.

Arsenal ratings:

1. Petr Cech - 8.5

Had his best performance as an Arsenal player and sensationally denied both Benteke and Coutinho at the end of the first half.

2. Hector Bellerin - 7.5

Hard to see Debuchy getting his spot back as Bellerin did almost everything right at the back for the Gunners. Popped up in attack too.

3. Nacho Monreal - 6

Quiet but solid performance.

4. Calum Chambers - 4

Woeful at the back during the first half but improved slightly in the second period. When is Koscielny back?

5. Gabriel - 7

Impressed in the absence of Mertesacker. Gabriel's pace is a big asset and defended well despite Arsenal's poor control of the ball in the first 45 minutes.

6. Francis Coquelin - 7

Some well timed tackles kept Arsenal on level terms. Coquelin continues to be the hardman adding steel to the Gunners midfield.

7. Santi Cazorla - 6.5

At times looked dangerous and his through ball for Ramsey's "goal" was probably the best pass of the season..

8. Aaron Ramsey - 6

Had a goal disallowed but wasn't at his best for large parts of the contest.

9. Mesut Ozil - 5.5

Only delivered flashes of his talent and tired towards the end.

10. Alexis Sanchez - 6.5

Not yet 100% fit, the Chilean was a constant threat. Should've scored in the second half but his close range effort hit the post.

11. Olivier Giroud - 5

Scuffed a few shots and he remains to be the weakest link.

Best of the bench: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 6

Stung Migolet's palms with a last-gasp strike but in general, the Arsenal bench added little value to the game.

Liverpool ratings:

1. Simon Mignolet - 7.5

Steady and solid - a good evening out for Mignolet.

2. Nathaniel Clyne - 7

Proving his worth in a Liverpool shirt.

3. Joe Gomez - 7.5

Enjoyed a fine evening on Monday and looks to be one of the signings of the summer.

4. Martin Skrtel - 6

Almost scored an own goal but was fairly solid at the back.

5. Dejan Lovren - 7

One of his better performances as a Liverpool player.

6. Emre Can - 7

Looked impressive on the ball and created one or two chances in the first half.

7. Lucas - 6.5

Considering it was his first match of the season and the continuous talk of his Anfield exit, Lucas was decent in midfield.

8. James Milner - 7

A typical James Milner display - hardworking and industrious as ever.

9. Roberto Firmino - 6

Quiet and ineffective on his first start but did provide a hint of the potential he has at times.

10. Philippe Coutinho - 8

Liverpool's most constant attacking threat, this kid can play!

11. Christian Benteke - 5

Missed a glorious chance to put his side in front from 2 yards out and squandered one or two more decent chances.

Best of the Bench: Jordan Ibe - 5

Forgettable performance from the Liverpool youngster.
