Pienaar keen to leave Spurs

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana skipper Steven Pienaar wants to play regular first-team football and is willing to leave White Hart Lane to find it.

Pienaar was the subject of an enquiry by Queens Park Rangers last week, with Spurs turning down their initial approach.

But the player’s business manager, Rob Moore, says Pienaar is very open to a move away from the North London club if he does not feature in manager Harry Redknapp’s starting XI plans.

“The bottom line is that he wants to play regular first team football,” Moore told SuperSport.com. “He had that Everton, where he was voted Player of the Season and was an automatic selection.

“But he wanted to progress in his career and try his luck at a club that would be competing for trophies. He has had incredible bad luck with injuries though since joining Spurs and in that time the team has been playing very well, and the players who are in his position have been playing very well. So realistically it is going to be very difficult to get into the starting XI on a regular basis.

“For that reason Steven is open to other opportunities and we will see what this week brings. Of course, a lot comes down to Tottenham as well, whether they would be willing to let him go and at a reasonable price.

“They obviously want a strong squad and a strong bench as they are chasing Champions League football and the League title as well.”

Pienaar came on for the closing minutes of Spurs’ 3-2 loss at Manchester City on Sunday, just his second substitutes appearance in the English Premiership this season. He has started four games the entire campaign, three in the Uefa Europa League and one in the FA Cup.
