Man City sorry for coin attack

2012-12-09 20:46

Manchester - Manchester City have apologised to Rio Ferdinand after the Manchester United defender was struck by a coin as he celebrated his side's 3-2 win in Sunday's Manchester derby.

The English centre-back was left with blood pouring from his face after being hit by a missile apparently thrown from the crowd in the aftermath of Robin van Persie's injury-time winner for United at the Etihad Stadium.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation into the incident, while City expressed regret to Ferdinand.

"We apologise to Rio," said a spokesperson from the club.

"We condemn the actions of the individual concerned. We are reviewing the CCTV with the police and our normal security.

"We will support the police with any investigation and hopefully identify the person as soon as possible."

Ferdinand himself made light of what had happened, writing on Twitter: "what a result,3points! Sweet! Whoever threw that coin, what a shot! Can't believe it was a copper 2p....could have at least been a 1 coin!"

City manager Roberto Mancini claimed not to have witnessed the incident, but he condemned it nonetheless.

"I didn't see, so I don't know what happened," said the Italian.

"We have fantastic support but we can't do what that person did, because it's not good."

A fan wearing City colours also had to be restrained by home goalkeeper Joe Hart after walking onto the pitch and making his way towards Ferdinand after Van Persie's goal.

City had not lost a home game in the English Premier League for two years and their defeat saw United establish a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Tevez pushing around in the field, wildly kicking jones, city fans, throwing objects, like the barbaric loser's they have always been, they won the title on goal difference last year, that's it, nothing more, and u'r trying to act smart in front of a team who has a fan base 10 times ur's, who has won 19 times in the league, Lol, u can never buy class (@ the barbaric man city supporters who threw stuff) , u can never buy glory, keep dreaming, meanwhile, wanna hear a joke? Man City

      gary.sales.5 - 2012-12-09 22:09

Ferdinand is a real twat, going to celebrate in front of City supporters was looking for trouble, what the guilty fan did was definitely not right, but what an idiot,to say he has the brain of of a bird is to insult my feathered friends!

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-12-10 00:09

@piyushvirgopisces And don't forget apart from the goal difference, referee Mike Deans gave City a helping hand aswell. E.T.I.H.A.D Stadium = Eleven Twats In Hiding After Defeat. Manchester United....the Empire strikes back... Here's why: Liverpool had 18 top flight titles and then United knocked them off their perch. Arsenal were the invincibles in 2004 and went 38 games unbeaten and the Man United put them back in their place. Chelsea had their billions and a world class manager Jose Mourinho, before Man United took back their crown and destroyed them in Moscow in the 2008 CL final. City also had their billions and a near 2 year unbeaten home record and then again Man United ended it on their own turf. Manchester United always responded and come out stronger and more determined. It's who they are and it's ingrained in the spirit of the club.

@ Gary Sales. The picture above shows it must have happened at the section where the ManU supporters sat, but evidently still within missile range of the City supporters in the neighbouring block.

Good game of football, but its a real shame it will be remembered for the wrong reasons. It only takes a few people who claim to be 'fans' to ruin it and tarnish the sport and their own club.Nothing but hooligans. The rest of the world saw what some Man City fans do- they turn nasty when they lose and they still throwing money at their problems.Chants of gorilla and all sorts...whats wrong with some people? It's a damn football match not a WAR.

we have the technology to see the missile thrown at Rio; likewise lets use the damn technology to negate stupid calls by refs and their side kicks. MU was robbed a legitimate goal!

  • cry.mashiane - 2012-12-10 05:19

So the cameraman decided not to show the fan invading the pitch because it would tarnish the image of british football, I tell you these english media is too clever they only show the good side never the bad side.

  • dewaldmarais - 2012-12-10 05:34

Their own clubs throw enough money at the players no need for the opposition to start doing it. Great game

  • kavudh.panday.1 - 2012-12-10 12:43

Before Utd fans jump on the band wagon, they must remember their own fans hurled objects at Craig Bellamy when he was at City. In no way is this acceptable, but your own fans aren't angels themselves.

  • mark.prins.359 - 2012-12-10 13:23

What can i say,it happends to any football match in the world..........but did you guys ever discover about the new signings of Man united. They make there name to score in a derby........and that not any goal is the winning one.......the same micheal owen did in his first derdy now RVP........City will never win a cup anymore they done and dusted.

  • sharmilen.naidoo - 2012-12-10 16:08

Kavudh....how do you know that all these comments are from Manchester United fans? Do yourself a favour and get your facts correct before posting you wasteful comments here. Let us not start that debate about why English clubs were banned from Europe in the 80's.....had nothing to do with Fan behaviour......NOT!

      kavudh.panday.1 - 2012-12-10 21:46

what are you on about??? my comment was aimed at utd fans having a dig at city when their own fans can't be controlled themselves!!! AS I SAID in no way are these incidents acceptable in football irrespective who you support.... my facts are 100% correct, maybe you should take some time understanding my post rather than acting jumping to your narrow minded conclusion. cheers

      gerald.parker.3956 - 2012-12-11 06:46

kaduvh lots of the comments are from fans of other clubs not just Man Utd and where is there any comment that Man Utd fans have not done the same. This is not the first time this season that this has happened. PLEASE name the Man Utd fans who on this blog have been jumping on the bandwagon as you put it and pointing fingers at Man City fans.

  • sharmilen.naidoo - 2012-12-11 07:45
