Late penalty saves Everton

Wigan - Leighton Baines converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute as Everton salvaged a point in their 2-2 draw at Wigan in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Baines kept his nerve after Kevin Mirallas was pulled down by Maynor Figueroa at the DW Stadium.

Chasing their first league win of the season, Wigan went ahead in the 10th minute through Arouna Kone before Nikica Jelavic's header brought Everton level less than a minute later. Franco Di Santo put Wigan ahead again in the 23rd minute.

Wigan almost won it in stoppage time when Shaun Maloney's deflected shot looped over goalkeeper Tim Howard, only to land on the roof of the net.

Everton dropped a place to third with 14 points from seven games, while Wigan remain narrowly above the relegation zone.
