Cape Town - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits his side were "very lucky" to have taken all three points against Southampton following Monday's St Mary's encounter.

Robin van Persie's two goals secured the Red Devils a fifth successive Premier League victory to move them up to third in the standings.

However, it was the Saints who dominated the match while Van Gaal's side managed only three shots on target - the lowest of a Manchester United team in any top-flight game since August 2003.

"I think Southampton played better than Manchester United - I think we were the lucky guy," Football411 quotes Van Gaal as saying.

"We lost the ball too easily in the first half. We didn’t have very good positional play. The only chances that Southampton created were when we lost the ball.

"The first goal was a present from Southampton, but the second was very nice because I thought the goalkeeper was coming out but he didn’t, so we were very lucky."
