Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that star duo Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria have rejected the chance to extend their Real Madrid careers.

"Khedira's situation is different because he has just a year left on his contract and has rejected a new one. We will see what happens, but his situation is different because he has not asked to leave."

Khedira's current deal expires at the end of the season and will be allowed to leave on a free next July.

Bayern Munich are favourites to land the player, who reportedly seeks a move back to Germany.

Outspoken Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has spoken fondly of Khedira's talents.

"Khedira would fit in in any team. He would fit in very well at Bayern, too," Beckenbauer was quoted as saying by Sport Bild.

"He is incredibly strong in the No 6 position.

"He could play alongside Philipp Lahm or Bastian Schweinsteiger. That would be perfect."

Real Madrid will now desperately try and offload the German World Cup winner in order to recoup some of €14 million they spent when the signed Khedira from Stuttgart in 2010.

Chelsea and Arsenal have both been linked with a move for the German star player.
