Joe Cole joins Liverpool

Liverpool - England midfielder Joe Cole has joined Liverpool on a four-year contract from Premier League rivals Chelsea, the Anfield club announced here on Monday.

Cole, 28, has agreed personal terms with the Reds and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours, Liverpool said in a statement.

He becomes the club's second pre-season signing after Milan Jovanovic and is set to join a Liverpool team now being managed by ex-Fulham boss Roy Hodgson.

Cole won three Premier League titles and two FA Cups during a seven-year spell with Chelsea.

He made his name with Chelsea's London rivals West Ham and has scored 10 goals in 56 England appearances.

Cole claimed unspecified "political rather than footballing reasons" had led to his departure from Chelsea back in June, but he insisted manager Carlo Ancelotti had nothing to do with it.

"It is not financial and it is nothing to do with Carlo," he said at the time. "I love Carlo. I think he is a top guy and a top manager.

"I loved my time at Chelsea, I love the fans but it is a story for another day and I will tell it but now is not the time."

Having been on the bench for much of England's lacklustre World Cup campaign, Cole laid down his conditions to potential suitors while still in South Africa.

"Next season I want to have a fantastic season for England and whatever club I am at," said Cole.

"The next contract - it will be a footballing decision. I want to play in a more central position and I want a manager who has faith in me."

Tottenham Hotspur, whose manager Harry Redkapp nurtured Cole's early career at West Ham, and north London rivals Arsenal were also reported to be interested in the midfielder.

But even though Arsenal finished third last season and Tottenham fourth, Cole has joined a Liverpool team who could only end the Premier League campaign in seventh place and who haven't won the English title since 1990.

I like this article, but the last paragraph tells me this writer is jelous of JC's decision. No matter where, a big club as huge as Liverpool finish after they have one bad season, it does not mean they will become small. Tottenham had one good season, but JC knows that it' not sustainable and Arsenal don't really like English players and have never won a Champions league, they're perrenial bridemaid. Welcome Joe, make us proud.YNWA

The reason why the English and Bafana are not performing well is because of Premier league coaches. Do you ever think your rivals will sell you their best player? No ways. This coaches must start to believe in young players, they must start looking for players at their development and second division leagues.

I'm excited to have him with us, but his wages are a bit outrageous. Hope it's not really in the 90 000-100 000 pounds per week bracket. He's not worth that much. I know it's a free, but still. He's not going to be great over the whole four years. 2 good years maybe. Nice to have him still. I wonder if he'll don the legendary number 7 shirt.

Yes this is the same Roy who played for Berea Park in Pretoria

He has made the right move, this may give Gerrard more room to operate-we need a tpo striker to complement Torres then acquire a central defender too.Welcome to the home of English football son.

not one of the top 4 obviously wanted to pay his high wages......not to play in the champions league questionable....bit of a mercenary...what happened to wanting to play at the highest level......sure he does need the money......maybe gerrard is on his way

welcome to the best team in the world, even my girlfriend loves Liverpool

Well said! Not counting Man U, the rest of the Premiership clubs put together probably have not won as many trophies as Liverpool. So yes, JC left Chelsea (who is funded by a billionaire) for Liverpool (who is struggling financially), you've guessed it people, for the MONEY. Get real guys, he wants to play football in the Premiership for a team who actually wins trophies i.e. Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Massive signing for Liverpool; presumably moved to the Reds because no one else could guarantee him a start, and champs league football is not beyond Liverpool's ability. If we can keep this, the central axis of Torres-Cole-Gerrard-Mascherano-Agger/Skrtel-Reina should make any side fear the 'pool again. As long as we can sign a quality left back, of course...

  • REALITY - 2010-07-20 07:29

@ M3 crap(king)....The reason why Arsenal dont have many english players is because the english players are simply crap....The have just proven that in the 2010 WC .

Spot on Bob. Who would you get to fill the LB position? It's a tricky one...

  • justin - 2010-07-20 10:40

i hope that vacant LB spot can be filled with a qulity player though nt many good names come to mind though, pity we lost ARIELIO he was good, since his departure there was always a big hole there and its been hard to find a good lft back.

DJ.....just be glad your girlfriend loves you.....the fact that she loves linerpool doesn't say much..........cole was a money champion league this year and you have to end above UTD, Chelsea, Arsenal,City and champions league next year...u can challenge for the Europa league!!!!!!!!!

  • @nick &bob - 2010-07-20 11:21

liverpool should get wayne bridge. then they have a perfect line up of injury prone players. so we can keep hearing the excuses that our players were injured most of the season.

  • Ian - 2010-07-20 12:19

Shame, poor JC! He will be relegated with Liverpool this season. Ouch!

  • Pedro Depacas - 2010-07-20 12:23

Joe Cole is a quality player ....he chose LIVERPOOL did he not ?? Welcome , and hope you score plenty !!!

  • Shankly's Kin - 2010-07-20 14:10

Sour grapes Ian? Sad because he didn't join your team? Sound like a United fan to me. The squad is suddenly looking a lot stronger with Cole and Jovanavic signing on. We just need to sign two left backs (dumb move to let Insua go, he was still learning), a top class striker to fill in for Torres and we'll be good to challenge for top 4 and hopefully win a trophy in the process. Won't be too sad if Masch leaves. I love him and he does a great job, but if he wants to go, the club cannot force him to stay. He's a destroyer. It's not like he's unlocking defenses for us. Plessis or Lucas could do the job.

    wht about Asamoah gyan

  • AL - 2010-07-21 13:03

He should have chosen Tottenham, they are a team on the up with a fantastic manager. Liverpool will take a few years to get back to `almost` winning anything.
