The England striker missed United's 2-1 win over Stoke on Tuesday with the injury he sustained by sliding into an advertising hoarding during the 3-0 victory over Hull on Saturday.

Van Gaal told reporters: "in my opinion, it is not so heavy but I am not a doctor. We have to wait (for) a scan and we will know more."

Manchester United moved within one point of third-placed Southampton but the Saints have a game in hand over the Red Devils.

Van Gaal will take his side to Southampton on Monday for a crunch English Premiership fixture.
