Goalkeeping dilemma for Pardew

Cape Town - Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is planning to approach the Premier League once again to request signing a goalkeeper on an emergency loan, reports Football411.

Magpies number-one Tim Krul and back-up Rob Elliot are both ruled out through injury, which has seen understudy Jak Alnwick start the last two games in goal.

The 21-year-old shipped four goals each, against Arsenal in the league on Saturday and Tottenham in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, after Pardew was blocked from bringing in keeper cover by top-flight rules.

But a shoulder injury sustained in the quarter-final defeat to Spurs means that Alnwick is a doubt for the Tyne-Wear derby this weekend, leaving Pardew with 17-year-old Freddie Woodman as his only option between the sticks.

The 53-year-old, though, is keen to prevent having to throw Woodman into the deep end and will speak to the league bosses on Friday about being granted special dispensation.

Commenting on Alnwick, Pardew said: "He has an injury to his shoulder so we're going to have to see.

"It is something we might have to look at tomorrow because there is no way that a 17-year-old [Freddie Woodman] - that's our fourth-choice - should be allowed to go in goal at this level.

"We will perhaps talk to the Premier League tomorrow about Jak's situation."

Asked whether Alnwick's injury needed to be assessed before a loan would be considered, he added: "I am not actually sure. I'd have to speak to the chief executive.

"The rules do allow you to have an emergency goalkeeper, I do know that, if you've only got one senior fit goalie. Freddie is classed as a senior even though he is 17 because he is a professional."
