Gerrard in trouble over V-sign

2010-03-09 14:14

London - Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard could be facing an FA investigation over an alleged V-sign he made at referee Andre Marriner, according to reports on Tuesday.

Gerrard was booked in the 81st minute of Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Monday, and television pictures seemed to show him directing a two-fingered gesture at Marriner while mouthing an obscenity.

Marriner did not notice the gesture but the FA may consider charging Gerrard.

"I don't know, I was too far away," said Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez when asked about the incident.

What the hell is a V-Sign?

  • Stretend - 2010-03-09 14:31

Typical &*#@$ scouser when things go wrong! The greatest joy, apart from watching UNITED win, is to watch Liverpoo get downed!! 7th for Poo is about it!!

  • Morne - 2010-03-09 14:36

  • rbgguy @ Craig - 2010-03-09 14:38

It's a peace sign turned around.

  • donmulto - 2010-03-09 14:39

He was probably just telling him to chill out with a peace sign. I think the ref should be investigated for inconsistency.

  • Hahaha - 2010-03-09 14:39

Liverpool lose again, suprise suprise. A V sign means "f" you by the way. If I were Gez i'd also be bleak

  • Dave - 2010-03-09 14:39

  • Louis - 2010-03-09 14:40

Craig...A V sign means VIRLOOR ALWEER. GUNNER.

  • mike - 2010-03-09 14:45

It's similar to the middle finger. Back in the day the English archers were the best around, able to kill from a few hundred meters. The French, at war with them at the time (as per usual), would cut off the middle and index finger of any archers they caught, making them unable to operate a bow. The English (still with fingers) would then make a 'V' sign as an "up yours" at the French, to indicate they could still use their bows. Important to note, the hand is the same orientation as in the "middle finger" - palm towards you. Otherwise it's "peace". Maggie Thatcher got it wrong once, giving the whole nation an "up yours" at some instance where the peace sign was required.

  • Jouma Sepurse - 2010-03-09 14:46

for a what? is that like a gentleman's middle finger? Soccer players are always swearing and gesturing at refs and nothing happens, or this this some lame story.

  • Werner - 2010-03-09 14:47

    @Graig Reversed peace sign...Meaning FU

  • Boetei - 2010-03-09 14:48

  • MILO - 2010-03-09 14:48

Craig, in England they show 2 fingers instead of 1, the middle & index fingers, that was the v-sign,,,so in other words, he said to the ref,,,&^*^$%

Rude English hand sign that derives from the middle ages. During the 100 years war the French would cut off the middle and index fingers of any English bowman so as they could never shoot again. The English would taunt the French by showing their fingers, so as to say "I can still shoot you Frog!" although todays meaning is more or less "f**k off you twat." Is the trademark of rock star, Liam Gallagher but was also made popular during the second world war by Winston Churchill where it took on the meaning of V for Victory. It should not be confused with the piss-poor peace sign which is the reverse of it with the palm and fingers facing the viewer instead of the back of the hand. Due to its historical relevance it should be particularly directed at the French and other historical enemies of the English.

  • Steve - 2010-03-09 14:57

  • Liverpool FC SA - 2010-03-09 15:15

    We've won it 5 times.........

  • The Real Craig - 2010-03-09 15:19

...just shows again that in soccer, if you're a pig, you generally get away with it. I would LOVE to see this happen in cricket/tennis/rugby...instant banning when either swearing at the ref or touching them. Ask Percy Montgomery. But in soccer, you can do what you like...

  • Craig - 2010-03-09 15:55

Doesn't liverpool still have the most impressive trophy haul of any English team?

  • Ian - 2010-03-09 16:18

Do the V with your fingers... looks like the PEACE sign. It actually means one in the PINK and one in the STINK. CONCIDER YOURSELF EDUCATED

  • HE COMES FROM SERBIA... - 2010-03-09 17:36

@ Liverpool FC SA - We've won it 3 times.... without killing anyone.... we've won it 3 times! Keep on living in the past. 18 league titles (last one 20 years ago...) In Rafa we Trust....and so say all of us United fans too! Tossers

  • @CRAIG - 2010-03-09 21:34

No they do not have the most impressive trophy haul any longer.....stop being ignorant and count!! MANCHESTER UNITED (The Greatest Club on the PLanet) now boasts that feat...besides things like the treble etc, etc, etc....Liverfool days are long gone....with a waiter at the helm what'd you expect?! 18-18 Leagues, 11-7 FA Cups, 3-5 UEFA CL...besides the Silverware, go back to inception of Prem league and check combined points, goals for and against etc...( to stats)!! Dave Whelan said it all TONIGHT..quote,"Liverpool are a spent force.... " One more thing...had the Busby Babes 'played on' and had not perished in that fateful plane crash, United would not have had to play catch up with the trophies, but would have been way way ahead in the count!!

  • Never Walk Alone - 2010-03-09 21:50

I think he was indicating to his fat useless manager that, two more losses this season due to your dodgy team selections and I am Vu$#g off !!!

  • @ Liverpool FC SA - 2010-03-09 22:02

......hahahaha, that used to be, not so long ago..."We won it 18 times!!!" Hehehehehahahah

  • Gavin - 2010-03-10 14:07

V sign was for all those Man U supporters come next game at Old Trafford where we will show you guys once again how football should be played.

  • TRUE Red - 2010-03-10 15:25

so, no punishment for Stevie - "The FA, it is understood, accept Liverpool's version of events that Gerrard was not gesturing at Marriner. Indeed the midfielder was making the point that he had been brought down twice in bad tackles and there had been no sanction while he was annoyed at being cautioned. He was not specifically targeting the official."
