Gerrard eyes trophy haul

Liverpool - Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes the club's wait for fresh silverware success could be about to end under Kenny Dalglish.

Anfield great Dalglish, widely regarded as Liverpool's greatest player, returned for a second spell as manager last season after the club headed towards the relegation zone under Roy Hodgson and oversaw an upturn in the Merseysiders's fortunes.

Liverpool's last trophy was the 2006 FA Cup, which England midfielder Gerrard played a key role in bringing to Anfield and the local hero and one-club man, speaking to the Reds' official website, said on Tuesday: "What I can say to the fans is that Liverpool will be back among the trophies sooner rather than later because we are moving in the right direction

"We have got fantastic players, the structure of the club is healthy from top to bottom and when that is the case then the team won't be too far away from winning."

Liverpool haven't won the English title since 1990 and last season saw arch-rivals Manchester United break their domestic record of 19 Championships.

But Gerrard was confident Liverpool would add to their list of league titles.

"We will get the championship again. It's difficult to say when because that adds a lot of pressure to the team."

It can only be good for English premier league soccer if Liverpool get back to their best. It's like having Vettel win every grand get a bit tired of Man United and Chelsea having things all their own way! This of cours has nothing whatever to do with the fact that I was brought up on Merseyside before coming to SA.....

      Bob - 2011-06-28 14:48

Jeremy, of course it has nothing to do with the fact you were brought up on Merseyside, it all points to the fact you are extremely knowledgable about football, the reason I know this is that I am a Liverpool supporter, who also happened to be brought up during part of my youth on Merseyside, all scousers, even the blues, are acknowleged worldwide as the ultimate authority on English football, Stevie G is merely confirming what all us Liverpool fans already know.

      Rammsteen - 2011-06-28 14:49

Jeremy, I haven't been close to Liverpool city - but a Reds fan all my life.

      jeremy - 2011-06-28 15:03

My thanks to Bob and Rammsteen. It's nice to have a chat about something that doesn't end in racist insults!! For the record, I was brought up in a small town called West Kirby which is on the tip of the Wirral peninsula just south of Liverpool.

you going to wait a long time

I'm a Liverpool supporter through and through, and their youth academy is looking up, but we need more quality players in the senior side. There are a few faithful that are getting on in years and we will not get anywhere without new blood. New owners and King Kenny are very positives though.

      Bob - 2011-06-28 15:02

Frankly, don't worry we are right on track, look what we achieved in only a few months with KK and a badly demoralised, depleted squad, and no Gerrard, most exciting season ahead for twenty years.

My favourite player of ALL-TIME. Stevie G, oh captain my captain, if you say so, I believe you mate. We've been through hell the last few years, but now that Hick's & Gillett are gone, the club is debt free, FSG seem keen & OFCOURSE, the King is back, I'm looking forward to the season & can't wait for it to start. He is right though - we can't say WHEN, as that would be silly - you can't go from 6th to 1st, but Top 4 is a possibility again for next season IMHO, and hopefully we have enough depth to challenge for the cup's as well

      jowza - 2011-06-28 15:55

i agree,a mediocre team should never over achieve

      Bob - 2011-06-28 16:12

TRUE Red, oh yes we can go from 6th to 1st, this is Liverpool we are talking about here, everything is possible, I would go so far as to say a top 4 is a certainty and 1st a distinct possibility. jowza, you are a has been and so is your team, I reckon you support Scum Utd, Barca fodder.

      Albo - 2011-06-29 14:55

@Bob - "has been"??? Don`t you mean current CHAMPIONS!!! I do agree that the better the competition the better the league but ffs please pull your head out of the clouds!!

      Bob - 2011-06-29 15:48

Albo, what the heck are you ranting about "don't you mean current CHAMPIONS", and "the better the competition the better the league" seriously, have you been drinking too much, I'm concerned about your mental state.

      Albo - 2011-06-29 16:35

@Bob - pls read YOUR comment first I was replying to, *sigh*

  • Innocent - 2011-06-28 16:13

    You will never walk alone

  • 420 - 2011-06-28 19:02

We need to wrap up a couple more players, and if the rumours are to be believed, we can expect another three signings. Meireles leaving is a shame, thought he played a major role in getting us up the table...
