Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Quinton Fortune made a surprise appearance for Manchester United in their pre-season friendly against Scottish side Aberdeen on Tuesday night.

Fortune left the Red Devils in 2006, but has remained close to the team in an ambassadorial role.

According to the website, he was given a run in the match alongside the likes of David de Gea, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Anderson, Bebe, Ryan Giggs and the returning Darren Fletcher.

The game was a benefit match for Aberdeen stalwart Neil Simpson, but with the new English Premiership season just a few days away, was also an important run for some of the United players.

Aberdeen won 2-1, Fortune missing an opportunity to equalise in the dying minutes having come off the bench in the 68th minute.

Fortune made 76 appearances for United in seven seasons with the club, floating between midfield and left-back, and as recently as last season said he was still interested in prolonging his professional career.

I know UTD is trying to bring back the veterans in order to return to glory days where they were one of the top teams in Europe. But this is going far.

Just the other day I was wondering what had happened to him, I remember him playing for us in the '02 world cup in Japan. Good on him!
