Ferguson: I'm not retiring

2013-01-02 06:57

London - Alex Ferguson has quashed retirement talk by revealing he has no plans to step down as Manchester United manager in the near future.

Ferguson, who turned 71 on Monday, has been forced to deal with questions about his retirement plans since the time he reversed his decision to leave the club in 2002.

With Pep Guardiola due to end his post-Barcelona sabbatical in a few months, Jose Mourinho tipped to leave Real Madrid and David Moyes' Everton contract close to expiring, three of the main candidates to replace Ferguson could be available at the end of the season, prompting a new round of speculation about the Scot's future.

But Ferguson, who has been in charge at Old Trafford since 1986, marked the new year by making it clear he won't be leaving United for some while.

"I'm hoping to stay on for a bit of time," he said in an interview with the Abu Dhabi Sports channel.

It is widely accepted few will get to know when Ferguson is ready to call it a day, with chief executive David Gill the man tasked with advising the Glazer family about a replacement.

And, though Guardiola, Mourinho and Moyes are bound to be at the top of the list if they are available, Ferguson knows plenty of other candidates are likely to have emerged by the time he finally quits.

"It's very difficult," Ferguson said. "Over the years, names have been bandied about but football is such a precarious industry.

"But you could be talking about one of the potentially exciting young managers in the game, but is he going to be here in two or three years' time?

"The sack race is horrendous. Sometimes a manager can only survive four games if he doesn't win a match.

"Top managers will always been in demand but nobody knows where they are going to be in two or three years' time."

No African player will play for Man u as long as I'm still here Fergie was quoted after a misunderstanding wit Djemba-djemba and he surely was d last. Fergie a racist. To think so many pple in Africa adores him. Make me sick

      xolani.gazu - 2013-01-02 07:52

Quinton Fortune played for united for more than 5 years regularly, he is now an ambassador and holds a position in marketing the brand of united and is also south african by the way. Get yo facts right before accusing people of being racist. I hate it when a white person pulls a race card but i hate it even more when a black person does that. Nx

      gerald.parker.3956 - 2013-01-02 09:14

      sharmilen.naidoo - 2013-01-02 13:13

South Africans of all colour adore him and so do millions around the world, football fans and others as well. I don't see your name being talked about in the highest quarters. What does tell you? You are completely irrelevant in the greater scheme of things. Crawl back into your hole and keep on thinking that every person who says Black and never in one sentence are racist. Go educate yourself before posting your worthless comments.

  • mawewe.mashele - 2013-01-02 07:45

Go Fergie, you have achieved all the Managers wants to achieve. Is better to Retire while you are still at your best.

  • stefan.alberts.77 - 2013-01-02 07:47

@ nkosi.tsheda - You're an idiot calling Ferguson a racist who will never allow a black African to play for Man U. Even SA's own Quinton Fortune played for Man U under Ferguson.

      xolani.gazu - 2013-01-02 07:56

exactly what i just told him stefan. Racism will not die if we still have people with nkosi around.

      xolani.gazu - 2013-01-02 07:57

      like nkosi i meant.

This man and his kind stands for the definition of success, unlike our SouthAfrican kind who only hating and farming for a living, Long Live Sir!!!

  • Spha - 2013-01-02 08:05

stefan u are 10 times an idiot, its been been over a decade since Quinton plyd 4 MU n he was d last African(irrespective of colour) to play under him yet the African players are d cornerstone of d EPL.ive been watching in disgust as many premiership coaches dnt want to release players 4 d Afcon i.e Wigan's Martinez,Newcastle's Pardew to mention a few.the premiership would b a mediocre league without our african players.

      nkosi.tsheda - 2013-01-02 08:18

Excatly my point Spha. Wen was d last time u heard Fegie bidding 4 an African player. That old man is a die hard racist who hates other races n this overshadows his sucesss.

      lucien.langenhoven - 2013-01-02 09:07

In plain and simple terms Nkosi and Spha you guys are just stupid. If you know the full story why SAF won't take on African players it's because of the AFCON and the fixtures they have. The Euros, American and Asian competitions are all held outside the normal footballing season, it's only the AFCON that takes place during the most crucial time of the EPL. Fergie said that is the main reason why he doesn't want African players is because it always clashes with a time when the FA Cup and League is at its most vital time. He also said he doesn't want to negotiate with soccer officials with playing qualifiers for these tournaments because this clash as well. Get your facts straight first before accusing anyone. Why do you think Steven Pienaar resigned from international football, he wants to play for Bafana but the times they organise their games don't suit the league he is playing in and Everton pay's his salary week in and out, not Bafana. If you don't believe me that this is a problem just check if Liverpool has any African players, they don't and the last African to play for Liverpool was Rigobert Song of Cameroon almost 8 years ago and they had the same problem of releasing the player during this time. So I suggest you question AFCON organisers to make sure our players can get the best of both worlds of playing for club and country in major competitions.

      gerald.parker.3956 - 2013-01-02 09:22

Spha and Nkosi just for your info Lucien is correct. Since you accuse Fergieof being rascist PLEASE name all the EPL clubs that have BLACK African players in their squads. Man City are upset that the two Toure brothers are not available for 5 weeks because of AFCON.

      mabandla.dlamini.3 - 2013-01-02 13:41

Pardew releases players. NUFC suffered due to the fact that an African nation, Senegal to be specific, blocked the club using their national captain in a match. This lead to said player reconsidering whether he wants to play for his national side any more. Clubs can block players from playing because they pay the salaries, they pay the medical bills, they are basically responsible for that player being fit to play and if the club needs that player to stay and help the club achieve something then it is their right to say no in the same manner a nation can block the same player from turning out for his club. This is a business after all, so why not protect your investment. A good case and point is Micheal Owen. Given he is not African, but he played for both NUFC and England and during his time at NUFC he was released to play for the national team many times and each time he came back injured in a manner that required weeks if not months out of football and each time he was fit to play he would turn out for the national side and return to the club broken to a point that NUFC told the English FA that they would have to foot the bill for his medical treatment and rehab.

  • nkosi.tsheda - 2013-01-02 08:06

The last African 2 play 4 man u was Djemba. He said no African wil play 4 man u wen he s still in charge. His words nt mine and he has never played them. That's racism in my world judging sm1 by their skin colour. He rejected Manucho and Diof rem.

      Jimmy NZ - 2013-01-02 08:39

You do know there are people from white, coloured, asian, indian and arab descent who call themselves african! Are black folk in America not american as they come from central Africa originally? I don't think Ferguson is racist (as he has black guys in his team) maybe he just doesn't rate african players!

      Thilivhali Fitzgerald - 2013-01-02 08:54

nkosi i dont think mr ferguson is racist there is evra who is his captain, nani ,rio y r they playin for man u if he is racist he mainly meant african players get being called to their national team even for a match not sanctioned by fifa and by that it affected his plans maybe its you who is racist

      nyakanyaka.nyakanyaka - 2013-01-03 00:43

Who cares bcos man u is average team, yes he is racist n africans play better footrball than u imagine sir.

  • Ntutu Dlova - 2013-01-02 10:37

@nkosi: You are embarrassing yourself. U dont seem to know much about football. SAF will not be having any headaches about loosing players to the AFCON this January. That makes him a brilliant manager not a racist. Still don't get why this tournament is played so often anyway.

  • vishen.singh.507 - 2013-01-02 11:14

Racist in what way?? Evra,Wellbeck and nani and Anderson are black.....mabe he just doesnt rate african soccer....all you gotta do is look at bafana bafana!!!!!

      sharmilen.naidoo - 2013-01-02 13:25

Well said Vishen. We are too quick to say our African brothers when the likes of Evra, Wellbeck and Nani grace our shores but then we want to say Sir Alex is a racist. Gary Bailey a South African played under Sir Alex for a short while in the mid 80's.

      mabandla.dlamini.3 - 2013-01-02 14:12

It's not about African soccer. It's about the frequency of the AFCON, and the time of the year it is played. It just creates unnecessary headaches for managers and SAF is right to say thanks but no thanks.

  • nyakanyaka.nyakanyaka - 2013-01-02 14:03

Is this furguson who fondled CT woman n denied? Racism is rife in ferguson head even the apartheid president had Black ministers, wen ferdinand was hit with a coin he said 'Ferdinand should have seen the coin coming', what a bull. Years back kaizer chiefs fc beat MU on penalties bt ferguson durin interview with bbc said the game results was a draw. Anyway their standerd is average.

      ikarolia1 - 2013-01-02 16:21
