Fergie: Crackdown on racism

2012-02-08 13:44

London - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says it is time that soccer took a hardline stance against racism and that he could not believe the problem had re-emerged in the sport.

Speaking before Saturday's clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford, their first league meeting since Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez served an eight match ban for racially abusing United defender Patrice Evra at Anfield in October, Ferguson told CNN: "I don't understand at all where its coming from.

"This is a moment where we have to take stock and we should do something about it, if it's surfacing again, and be really hard and firm on any form or shape of racism.

"There have been a couple of examples recently which is not good. In 2012 you can't believe it. It was obvious maybe 20 years ago and the improvements have been there for everyone to see."

Suarez missed the FA Cup win over United on January 28 while still banned but he returned to the Liverpool side as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday and is likely to play at United at the weekend.

Chelsea skipper John Terry is awaiting trial in July after being charged with racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, which Terry denies.

However, he was stripped of the Englans captaincy last week by the English FA, who ruled he could not lead the England team until the trial was over.

I am with you on that Sir, thumbs up...

  • Shaun - 2012-02-08 14:14

At the same time, he should focus on taking cheating out of football as well.......his players take the cake in that regard!

      Paul - 2012-02-08 15:13

Yeah and Ferguson was lucky to not get another touchline ban.

  • Sharmilen - 2012-02-08 15:14

Yeah Shaun, he can become the Ambassador for "cheating" starting with the EPL. Have you ever proven that MU players cheat. I suppose by your arrogant comments you support Liverpool..........enough said.....we all remember Bruce"grab the money" Grobelaar -CHEAT!!!CHEAT!!!. If you support any other team well done to you!!!

      Bob - 2012-02-08 15:33

Sharmilen do you watch football ? thats all you have to do to confirm that Scum Utd are cheats, it's on display every weekend, Bruce needed the money mate, do you know how little footballers were paid in those days, I'm joking before all you manc supporters climb on my back, only the Bruce bit though.

      Shaun - 2012-02-08 16:01

Having played pro football for 13 years in the UK and SA, believe me I know what cheating is Sharmilen. I support football, quality game play where top sportmans are pipped against each other and best prepared and focused prevail....not the one who cheats his was to a win.

      Barrie - 2012-02-09 17:37

Sharmilen, you make me laugh, you are owned by AIG, the biggest fraudsters on the planet!

  • Bob - 2012-02-08 15:23

Just starting his Psyche crap ahead of the match, trying to unnerve Suarez, it's not gonna work Fergie, concentrate on trying to get something out of the game instead of your bull.

  • Bob - 2012-02-08 15:41

They have either air brushed that picture up of old Fergie or it's about twenty years old, you can hardly make out his big blue whiskey nose.

      Deon - 2012-02-08 20:44

Come on Bob, blind if you think United are the only ones that "cheat" in your eyes. Diving is a horrible part of the game now but lets be fair all teams do it. Stevie G does it a lot, cast your mind back to the Champions league in Istambul or his dives fro England against Portugal. Remember Charlie Adam against United in October with his dive to win the free kick that resulted in the goal, not to mention Downing's dive when he was "tackled" by Evra in the first half, but everyone calls Bale a diver for his dive on Monday. ALL teams have players that do it. It's horrible and is killing the game. Whats that saying " people you live in glass house, shouldn't ...."
