'Expert's UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

ARSENAL v LIVERPOOL
Saturday, 19:30

The top-placed Gunners entertain the third-placed ‘Pool in a cracking Saturday evening feature match; you sense it is a brilliant opportunity for either – or perhaps even both – to remind the world of their genuine, or otherwise, title credentials this season. The backdrop to the clash is pretty good, too, when you consider that Arsenal come off an away derby win at ailing Crystal Palace, and the Merseysiders thrashed West Brom 4-1 at Anfield. Expect the Gunners to rely on their normal, attack-minded game-plan but there is also goal potential from the visitors as they bring the “SAS” (Suarez and Sturridge) alliance to the Emirates Stadium. I’m afraid I find it hard to separate the sides, so do the sensible thing and tip a 1-1 outcome. This fixture also ended with a point apiece last season.

Rob: Arsenal 1 Liverpool 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 2-1
Earl: 1-1
Last season: 2-2

THE GRUDGE MATCH

MANCHESTER CITY v NORWICH
Saturday, 17:00

These are not geographical close rivals or bitter enemies for any other special reason ... so why the grudge branding? It’s because City will be well aware that the Canaries were one of only two teams (the other was arch-rivals and eventual champions United) to upset them at home last season as they ended runners-up. The fact that this result came on the often meaningless last day of the season – the Blues could not finish higher by then, or even drop a rung – shouldn’t prevent City from wanting to reverse it quite emphatically. They will also recall that when they visited Norwich themselves they only edged out a ding-dong affair 4-3. The odds are greatly in their favour this time, as the visitors are labouring in the relegation zone and City ought to be smarting from their late loss at Chelsea last Sunday ...

Rob: Manchester City 2 Norwich 0
Garrin: 2-0
Dominic: 2-0
Herman: 3-1
Earl: 3-0
Last season: 2-3

THE DESPERATE DUEL

WEST BROM v CRYSTAL PALACE
Saturday, 17:00

Sorry, Palace fans ... after a bit of a respite your team recaptures this category! While the Londoners lost again last weekend, Sunderland went and toppled north-east foes Newcastle 2-1 in a derby, so moved off the bottom and left Palace in their place. With just three points to show from a possible 27 and as many as six losses on the trot going into this clash in the Midlands, the dice already looks pretty loaded against Palace staying up, doesn’t it? Their only hope for something out of the game is that the Baggies will be a little fragile themselves after leaking four times at Anfield last Saturday. Smart money nevertheless suggests a WBA win.

Rob: West Brom 2 Crystal Palace 0
Garrin: 2-1
Dominic: 2-0
