Cape Town – Each round of the 2014/15 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Herman Mostert (Chelsea), Earl Haupt (Liverpool) and a pesky new trio of Manchester United devotees in Tashreeq Vardien, Wade Pretorius and Maano Nekhavhambe.

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

MANCHESTER UNITED v TOTTENHAM

Sunday, 18:00

Leaders Chelsea’s home tussle with solid Southampton – with the Blues maybe nursing a hangover after their Champions League debacle in midweek – was another good candidate, but I opted in the end for this important fixture with Euro tickets for the next season in mind. Plus it’s a meeting of two of the most historically prestigious clubs in English football. United currently lie fourth, and are three points ahead of sixth-placed Spurs. The Red Devils ain’t pretty of late, but have won each of their last two league games nevertheless. It was nil-nil at White Hart Lane, so law of averages suggests at least some goals at Old Trafford: and five of us see Louis van Gaal’s charges edging it.

Rob: Manchester United 2 Tottenham 1
Garrin: 1-1
Herman: 2-1
Earl: 1-1
Wade: 3-2
Tashreeq: 2-1
Maano: 2-1
Last season: 1-2

THE GRUDGE MATCH

BURNLEY v MANCHESTER CITY

Saturday, 19:30

This may not be the biggest of the various Lancashire derbies, but as there’s only a half-hour drive between the centres, it still gets local pulses going a fair bit. The grudge factor is also introduced here because of what happened in the first-round clash earlier this season: City appeared to be coasting at home, 2-0 ahead at the break and massacre possible. But Burnley hit back pluckily to earn a shock 2-2 draw – it is the dropping of points like those that the Mancunian side may come to rue horribly at the end of the campaign. Still, a full house says City will get it right in the away fixture – Tashreeq even has it by a hatful against the heavily relegation-threatened battlers occupying 19th spot.

Rob: Burnley 0 Manchester City 2
Garrin: 0-2
Herman: 1-3
Earl: 0-2
Wade: 1-2
Tashreeq: 0-4
Maano: 0-1
Last season: Not applicable

THE DESPERATE DUEL

SUNDERLAND v ASTON VILLA

Saturday, 17:00

This is a bite-the-fingernails game between the two closest sides to the relegation zone, albeit not quite in it. Sunderland are one berth superior to the Midlanders in 16th, and as this is their home game I’m just backing them to steal three precious points from a tight, cagey scrap. Perhaps that’s ill-advised, as Villa won the corresponding game in the north-east last season? But there is some support for the result from others on the panel, even if all three outcomes are suggested.

Rob: Sunderland 1 Aston Villa 0
Garrin: 1-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 2-1
Wade: 1-0
Tashreeq: 1-1
Maano: 0-1
Last season: 0-1
