English Premiership flutter (File)

Cape Town - Each round of the 2014/15 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Herman Mostert (Chelsea), Earl Haupt (Liverpool) and a pesky new trio of Manchester United devotees in Tashreeq Vardien, Wade Pretorius and Maano Nekhavhambe.

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

ARSENAL v CHELSEA
Sunday, 17:00

Eighteen points each still to play for; Chelsea 10 to the good over Arsenal. At least mathematically, then, the Gunners still have a very outside chance of eclipsing their London rivals to the title. But it goes without saying that they really need to win Sunday’s big ‘un at the Emirates Stadium if that is to stay a vaguely reasonable possibility. Can they do it? On the basis of such consistent Premiership form for many weeks, Arsene Wenger’s outfit should have the conviction to strive for it ... yet our panel powerfully hold the view that the Blues, so good at parking the bus when they need to, will fight out a share of the spoils, thus only firming up their grip on the chase.

Rob: Arsenal 1 Chelsea 1
Garrin: 1-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 0-1
Wade: 1-1
Tashreeq: 1-1
Maano: 1-1
Last season: 0-0

THE GRUDGE MATCH

EVERTON v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 14:30

There’s always a grudge element when one of the “Manc” sides plays either of the big two from nearby Merseyside. This one will be no different, and the additional spice is the memory of last season’s corresponding game – also in April – when the Toffees piled further misery on the unhappy David Moyes tenure in the United hot seat with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park (Baines, Mirallas). That it was against his former club hardly helped the beleaguered boss. The Red Devils are starting to gel properly under Louis van Gaal now, and although most of our experts fancy the third-placed side to win on the road, I am bravely backing the improving Everton to earn a share of the spoils here.

Rob: Everton 1 Manchester United 1
Garrin: 1-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 1-1
Wade: 1-2
Tashreeq: 1-2
Maano: 0-2
Last season: 2-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

BURNLEY v LEICESTER
Saturday, 16:00

Seemingly dead certs for the drop a few weeks ago, Leicester have suddenly breathed fresh life into their survival hopes with a spirited run at just the right time. The Foxes have clawed their way from bottom to 18th, and within reachable distance of some three labouring teams immediately above them. Still, this is a critical fixture as it sees them visit another side in the relegation zone, Burnley. The host club are also battling grimly, and when they lose it tends not to be by big margins, as evidenced by last week’s narrow 1-0 setback at Everton. Tough one to call ... so I’m taking the conservative route of a feisty 1-1 and have some support for it. But all results are offered!

Rob: Burnley 1 Leicester 1
Garrin: 2-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 1-0
Wade: 1-1
