English Premiership flutter (File)

Cape Town – Each round of the 2014/15 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Herman Mostert (Chelsea), Earl Haupt (Liverpool) and a pesky new trio of Manchester United devotees in Tashreeq Vardien, Wade Pretorius and Maano Nekhavhambe.

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

MANCHESTER UNITED v MANCHESTER CITY
Sunday, 17:00

When these teams played the corresponding Old Trafford derby towards the end of last season, City were heading determinedly toward the title and brushed aside a lame Red Devils outfit 3-0, with strikes from Edin Dzeko (2) and Yaya Toure. But fortunes have changed quite significantly now: the Blues have slid to fourth in 2014/15, a whole nine points off the silverware pace, with United gleefully inching a point ahead in third – helped by City’s 2-1 shock reverse at Palace on Monday night. These may well be the same two berths the fierce rivals will be squabbling over come season’s end – remember that third is better because it marches you straight into the Champions League, whereas fourth requires some pre-qualification. Nobody on our panel suggests a City victory, although the clear majority view is a tense stalemate rather than home win.

Rob: Manchester United 1 Manchester City 1
Garrin: 1-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 1-1
Wade: 3-2
Tashreeq: 2-1
Maano: 1-1
Last season: 0-3

THE GRUDGE MATCH

QPR v CHELSEA
Sunday, 14:30

In recent years – with QPR not always even in the Premiership – you couldn’t describe these clubs as especially bitter rivals. But a London derby is nevertheless a London derby! And there’s a good bit at stake for both sides, with Chelsea wishing only to further cement their charge to the title, whilst Rangers are desperate to lift at least one berth out of 18th and free of the drop zone. They did earn a helter-skelter 3-3 draw away to Aston Villa on Tuesday, no bad result, but sadly for them there are no backers here for any joy against Jose Mourinho’s focused charges.

Rob: QPR 0 Chelsea 2
Garrin: 0-2
Herman: 0-2
Earl: 1-2
Wade: 1-3
Tashreeq: 1-3
Maano: 0-3
Last season: Not applicable

THE DESPERATE DUEL

BURNLEY v ARSENAL
Saturday, 18:30

Struggling Burnley’s last two home results have been a 0-0 draw with Tottenham and just before that a fabulous 1-0 edging of Manchester City, so there’s every chance they will throw the kitchen sink at another major challenge at Turf Moor: the visit of the resurgent, in-form Gunners (fresh off a 4-1 thumping of Liverpool, too). I fancy they have a fair shout at another fighting, precious point ... but will narrowly be beaten come the end of 90-odd minutes by the second-lying north Londoners and thus stay rather deep in the stinky stuff.

Rob: Burnley 0 Arsenal 1
Garrin: 0-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 0-2
Wade: 1-2
Tashreeq: 0-2
Maano: 0-2
Last season: Not applicable
