English Premiership flutter (File)

Cape Town – Each round of the 2014/15 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Herman Mostert (Chelsea), Earl Haupt (Liverpool) and a pesky new trio of Manchester United devotees in Tashreeq Vardien, Wade Pretorius and Maano Nekhavhambe.

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

ARSENAL v LIVERPOOL
Saturday, 13:45

A great way to start the latest Premiership round as Merseyside treks to London for a big clash of traditional heavyweight clubs. There’s plenty on the line, too, as both sides seeks Euro berths for next season; the Gunners are rather better placed in third, with a six-point cushion over fifth-placed ‘Pool. Considering also that it’s their home game, as many as five of our seven tipsters go the “Arsenal win” route – don’t forget that the visitors lost at home to Manchester United last time out. The first-round encounter this season was a 2-2 outcome at Anfield, Martin Skrtel’s header deep in stoppage time salvaging a point for the Scousers.

Rob: Arsenal 2 Liverpool 1
Garrin: 2-1
Herman: 2-0
Earl: 1-2
Wade: 2-1
Tashreeq: 1-0
Maano: 1-1
Last season: 2-0

THE GRUDGE MATCH

SUNDERLAND v NEWCASTLE
Sunday, 17:00

Some wags are saying the best team in the north-east this season is Middlesbrough ... who are not even in the Premier League, of course. These are certainly bleakish times on both Tyneside (ask me!) and Wearside, so much so that picking a winner for the bitter derby is a bit of a pot-luck sort of exercise. All I will guarantee are yellow cards. If anything, maybe the more desperate Black Cats, much closer to real relegation peril, must be slightly fancied if there is to be a victor on Sunday. But my Toon pride narrowly prevents me from going that route ... I’ve settled for the cagey old 1-1 and so do most of the others. (No cakes on their respective birthdays from the Houwing kitchen for either of Tashreeq or Maano.) But these pundits may have been influenced, in fairness, by Sunderland winning at Newcastle earlier in the season, and also earning bragging rights on both occasions  last year. This run just must be stopped ...

Rob: Sunderland 1 Newcastle 1
Garrin: 1-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 1-1
Wade: 1-1
Tashreeq: 2-1
Maano: 1-0
Last season: 2-1

THE DESPERATE DUEL

BURNLEY v TOTTENHAM
Sunday, 14:30

Key game for both sides: Burnley currently occupy the “top” slot in the relegation zone and must still believe they can survive the dreaded drop. Let’s not forget that in their last home game, they knocked over Manchester City 1-0 -- a huge tonic. Now can they repeat that level of passion to down Spurs, who still have a shout at some kind of Euro status for 2015/16? The Londoners’ own last away match saw them thumped 3-0 at Old Trafford, and then they earned a jittery 4-3 home win against basement club Leicester. But sometimes you should simply tip a goodish big ‘un to see off a limited little ‘un – it’s something we all do here.

Rob: Burnley 0 Tottenham 1
Garrin: 1-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 0-2
Wade: 1-2
Tashreeq: 1-2
Maano: 0-1
