‘Expert’ UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

NORWICH v LIVERPOOL
Sunday, 13:00

This is lunchtime fare on Sunday and I wonder if supporters of either side will be able to hold any food down! The game is a crucial, nail-biting one for both teams, of course ... the Canaries are in a grim fight to stay in the Premiership (currently a precarious 17th), whilst ‘Pool know that any slip-up could be pounced upon by Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of the title race. But considering that if they simply keep on winning for four more matches they will land the coveted trophy, all of us fancy that Steven Gerrard and company will make no mistake here. They have a recent history, let’s not forget, of lashing several goals past these foes whenever they meet, and won 5-1 in the Anfield fixture, for instance. Personally, I suspect a single goal in a tense affair might seal it for the Merseysiders this time ... dyed-in-the-red Earl hardly agrees!

Rob: Norwich 0 Liverpool 1
Garrin: 0-2
Dominic: 0-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 1-4
Last season: 2-5

THE GRUDGE MATCH

EVERTON v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 17:10

The Toffees are one of several teams to have gone to Old Trafford this season and won, with Bryan Oviedo’s late strike making the crucial difference. But apart from that result making for a revenge ingredient for the Red Devils, there is the little matter of David Moyes making a return to Goodison Park as manager of the opposition. The diplomatic and articulate Roberto Martinez, new boss of Everton, has recommended a warm welcome for him, and that is surely the right approach. But when the whistle sounds, expect any bonhomie to change in a flash! The Toffees are smarting from a shock loss at home to Crystal Palace, so badly require a victory here to sustain their Champions League charge. I think they’ll get it, though Garrin and Herman aren’t so sure.

Rob: Everton 1 Manchester United 0
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 2-1
Last season: 1-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

CHELSEA v SUNDERLAND
Saturday, 18:30

There’s certainly some mutual desperation for this clash: the Blues badly want to bag all three points to keep the heat right on Liverpool at the top of the table – they are two points behind with four rounds to play – whilst the basement Black Cats remain in dire straits and time is running out very fast to haul themselves to a miraculous escape from the drop. They will still be kicking themselves for conceding late to share the spoils 2-2 in a hugely gutsy performance at Manchester City in midweek: a win would have made it much more likely that they could yet haul themselves out of the dwang. But Stamford Bridge is a terrible place for them to have to play a second really big ‘un in the space of a few days ... no, it’s Chelsea to bag a comfortable triumph. Blues won a seven-goal thriller 4-3 at the Stadium of Light earlier in the campaign.

Garrin: 2-0
Dominic: 2-0
Herman: 2-0
Earl: 2-1
