Cape Town - Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.
Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).
Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.
THE PRIME ATTRACTION
ARSENAL v MANCHESTER CITY
Saturday, 19:30
Of course this might well have been the grudge game, too: Gunners fans, all too familiar with their favourites leaking six this season, still squirm uncomfortably remembering the 6-3 “tennis set” reverse to City at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season. So can Arsenal eke out a revenge victory? On present form, you have to say it’s doubtful ... they’ve just about raised the white flag on title hopes in losing 6-0 at Chelsea and then being held 2-2 at home by Swansea in midweek. Nevertheless, they can throw the race even wider open if they topple the Blues, currently among the front three horses in it. City have netted eight times without reply in their last two Premiership games (5-0 Fulham, 3-0 at their neighbours United): no surprise then that our tipsters strongly suspect an away triumph here. Garrin goes against the grain.
Rob: Arsenal 1 Manchester City 3
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-2
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 1-2
Last season: 0-2
THE GRUDGE MATCH
LIVERPOOL v TOTTENHAM
Sunday, 17:00
As is roughly their norm, Spurs have had some “difficult” results this season: just one of those was a terrible 5-0 hiding (one Luis Suarez naturally scored twice) from these opponents in the first-round meeting at their beloved White Hart Lane. It will take quite some turnaround in the Londoners’ fortunes to set things straight at Anfield, where the faithful dare to dream of winning the title – they’re just one point adrift of present leaders Chelsea and winning games consistently. Spurs had to dig rather deep to see off Southampton last time out. They won’t even be offered a spade for this match, alas ...
Rob: Liverpool 2 Tottenham 0
Garrin: 2-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 2-1
Earl: 3-1
Last season: 3-2
THE DESPERATE DUEL
WEST BROM v CARDIFF
Saturday, 17:00
Games are fast running out for relegation escape artists to perform their dubious “magic”! So that means sides like second-from-bottom Cardiff have to pull finger with some haste. The trouble with their visit to the Midlands on Saturday is that they tackle fellow drop candidates in West Brom (16th and certainly not securely so). The Baggies crashed 2-0 at Hull in their last game, so home confidence won’t be sky-high, but I believe they are capable of winkling out a narrow victory against the Welshmen, who leaked six times when prolific-scoring Liverpool came to town last Saturday. Cardiff did win the first-round clash between the two 1-0, but I’ve gone the reverse here.
