Cape Town - Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.
Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).
Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.
THE PRIME ATTRACTION
CHELSEA v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 18:00
Defending champions the Red Devils are probably already too far off the pace to seriously challenge for retention of the title, but this is also roughly the time of year when you have to start thinking “Champions League slots”. As things stand, they’ve even got work to do on that front if they are to avoid the unthinkable for them: their current seventh makes them seem likelier candidates for the Europa League slog! Their traditional modern rivalry with much higher-riding Chelsea should bring out urgent competitive juices, though four of our five tipsters see a tight home win. I suppose United fans will take heart, though, from the successful 3-2 London raid in last season’s equivalent meeting, when the Blues were reduced to nine men ...
Rob: Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 2-1
Earl: 2-1
Last season: 2-3
THE GRUDGE MATCH
MANCHESTER CITY v CARDIFF
Saturday, 17:00
Very early in the season, City were rocked back on their heels when the Welsh newcomers to the Premiership sensationally earned their first win in the top flight of English football since 1962, Fraizer Campbell’s reasonably late double strike inspiring a 3-2 win. So if ever revenge was a motivator ... well, this should be it! Let’s not forget that City tend to be free-scorers at home so everything seems to add up, in my book, to a big turnaround triumph. The visitors, after all, come off a home loss to fellow-strugglers West Ham. In-form tipster leader Garrin, interestingly, takes a conservative route with Dom, seeing it as just 2-0.
Rob: Manchester City 4 Cardiff 0
Garrin: 2-0
Dominic: 2-0
Herman: 3-0
Earl: 4-0
Last season: Not applicable
THE DESPERATE DUEL
CRYSTAL PALACE v STOKE
Saturday, 17:00
As much as they did their own cause no good by crashing 2-0 at Tottenham, Palace would have drawn no comfort at all from this result elsewhere: Fulham 1 Sunderland 4. It seemed to signal that even the Black Cats are finally on the move, and suddenly chipper about their chances of avoiding the drop. So the Londoners dropped back to the basement berth, and really must target all three points when iffy Stoke pay them a visit on Saturday. The Potters enter this one off a ping-pong 3-5 home reverse to Liverpool, so it’s not as though their confidence is at a great high. All outcomes are offered here, though my own suspicion is that Palace’s admirably noisy faithful will coax them to a narrow victory.
