'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town – Each round of the 2013/14 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do the exercise yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.
Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool, and the defending champion), Herman Mostert (Chelsea) and newcomer Earl Haupt (another ‘Pool fan).
Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

TOTTENHAM v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 14:00

It’s been a rough time for Spurs fans of late: their favourites have only collected one point from the last nine which has seen them slide to mediocre, for them, mid-table. Last weekend saw that awful 6-0 pasting at Man City and in their last home match there was Tim Krul’s amazing performance in the Newcastle goal as the Magpies registered a shock 1-0 win on the road. I just have a suspicion that they will see this as an ideal opportunity to regain some respect, and grab a fighting point in the visit of the champions (possibly still on Cloud Nine after their majestic midweek disposal of Leverkusen in Germany). My thoughts are echoed by Garrin and Dom, though the other forecasters envisage more misery for ‘AVB’ at White Hart Lane ...

Rob: Tottenham 1 Manchester United 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-1
Herman: 1-2
Earl: 1-2
Last season: 1-1

THE GRUDGE MATCH

LIVERPOOL v NORWICH
Wednesday, 21:45

These are no ordinarily fierce rivals, as evidence by their faraway geographical locations in England, and nor is it as though they are jockeying for real estate near the top of the table ... only the second-placed Reds can claim that, as the Canaries are down among the dead men. But Wednesday’s clash at Anfield is certainly a grudge fixture from a Norwich point of view: last season they had it awful against these foes, crashing 5-0 away and 5-2 at home. (Yes, Luis Suarez had a bit of a field day each time.) So they will hope for better fortunes in the first Premiership meeting of this campaign. If it’s any consolation for them, few of our panel see quite such hardship this time, but a full house suggests all three point for ‘Pool quite easily anyway.

Rob: Liverpool 2 Norwich 0
Garrin: 2-0
Dominic: 2-0
Herman: 2-1
Earl: 3-0
Last season: 5-0

THE DESPERATE DUEL

CRYSTAL PALACE v WEST HAM
Tuesday, 22:00

This London derby comes at a precarious time for both teams, which just raises the stakes higher. Hammers have conceded three goals in each of their last two Premiership games (including a 0-3 grilling at home to Chelsea last Saturday) and sunk to the fringes of the drop zone. Palace, of course, are very much in that territory and just holding off Sunderland to stay away from bottom slot. They do come off a heartening, rare win at Hull, so I just fancy that they are capable of following up with a home win in this one. I can’t find any support for that theory, it must be said.

Rob: Crystal Palace 1 West Ham 0
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-1
Herman: 1-1
Earl: 1-2
Last season: Not applicable
