'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2012/13 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 staff and occasional guest tipsters have a crack at predicting the results - do it yourself, if you like, and see how you compare afterwards.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (Newcastle-partial), the others are Garrin Lambley (Everton, and last season’s winner), Dominic Valentine (Liverpool) and Herman Mostert (Chelsea).

Three points are awarded for an entirely correct scoreline, and one for right result.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

TOTTENHAM v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 18:00

While the current Red Devils team somehow still look a tad short of “great”, when weighed up against some previous eras at Old Trafford, they remain mighty effective and clinical. Clear leaders United visit London for this appealing clash buoyed by four wins on the trot in the Premiership: 2-1 against Liverpool, 4-0 against Wigan, 2-0 against West Brom and 4-3 against Newcastle. It hardly helps Spurs’ prospects in this one that they haven’t won this particular fixture since 2001! But there is the motivation of knowing that they upset their hosts at Old Trafford in the early autumn. Dom and I fancy, nevertheless, that Fergie’s boys will narrowly avenge that setback. United won last season’s London encounter 3-1, aided by two goals from Ashley Young.

Rob: Tottenham 1 Manchester United 2
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 1-2
Herman: 1-1
Last season: 1-3

THE GRUDGE MATCH

CHELSEA v ARSENAL
Sunday, 15:30

OK, so Chelsea won 2-1 at the Emirates earlier this season to restore some pride, but they are still unlikely to have forgotten what transpired in last season’s equivalent league meeting at Stamford Bridge against their keen local rivals ... a remarkable 5-3 score-line favouring the Gunners. Robin van Persie got a hat-trick that day, so at least that rather obvious threat has been taken away this time; the Dutch international is instead banging them in routinely for Manchester United. Neither team for Sunday will be feeling in especially fine fettle: Arsenal come off a 0-2 home result against Manchester City, while the Blues will still be kicking themselves for allowing minnows Southampton to come from two down and earn a 2-2 outcome against them in midweek. Our tipsters’ sentiment strongly leans Chelsea’s way ... though with an Arsene Wenger team in opposition anything is possible.

Rob: Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1
Garrin: 1-1
Dominic: 2-1
Herman: 2-1
Last season: 3-5

THE DESPERATE DUEL

NEWCASTLE v READING
Saturday, 17:00

I read a piece the other day featuring Alan Pardew’s purported plans for a fresh Champions League-berth assault next season ... alas, it seemed to sum up just how loony things have gone at my beloved Toon! My own immediate thought: hang on just a minute, haven’t we got an anti-relegation battle to fight first in 2012/13? If Newcastle lose this one, heaven forbid, they really will be right down among the dead men. It’s a bit of a six-pointer, when you consider that the Magpies roguishly need Saturday’s visitors to stay well behind them, if possible. I am heartened to see that my colleagues all fancy some timely cheer at St James’s Park, so I have joined the rousing chorus. (Shh, I do admit to a great, great deal of nervousness ...)

Rob: Newcastle 1 Reading 0
Garrin: 2-1
Dominic: 2-0
Herman: 1-0
