'Expert' UK footy tips

Cape Town - Each round of the 2010/11 English Premiership season, a panel of Sport24 tipsters have a crack at predicting the results – do it yourself, if you like, and see how your scoreboard compares with ours in the report-back a week later.

Three precious points are given for an entirely correct score-line, and one for right result.

Compiled by Rob Houwing (the champion last season but a Newcastle supporter for his sins), the others are colleagues Garrin Lambley (very Everton-partial), David Brooke (Manchester United), Raymond Kilfoil (Tottenham) and Dominic Valentine (Liverpool).

We occasionally invite guest tipsters; this week Durban-born former Liverpool and Stuttgart striker SEAN DUNDEE, also no stranger to SuperSport studios and a confessed Arsenal fan, has a stab.

THE PRIME ATTRACTION

TOTTENHAM v MANCHESTER UNITED
Sunday, 18:10

Yes, while everyone else takes the sober, sensible 1-1 option, I’ve stuck my neck out: I reckon this finally is the game where the Red Devils – let’s face it, solid but seldom genuinely convincing – lose their unbeaten record. Spurs are just the kind of fickle outfit capable of doing it, given some of the mercurial players they possess. I am even prepared to overlook last season’s Premiership fortunes between the two – United won 3-1 on each occasion. In the equivalent fixture at White Hart Lane, Tottenham were ahead after only 38 seconds (Defoe) but the visitors struck back with goals via Messrs Giggs, Anderson and Rooney. But this hunch I have is surprisingly strong, I tell you!

Rob: Tottenham 2 Manchester United 1
Garrin: 1-1
Ray: 2-1
David: 1-1
Dominic: 1-1
Guest Sean Dundee: 1-1
Last season: 1-3

THE GRUDGE MATCH

SUNDERLAND v NEWCASTLE
Sunday, 14:00

This is as fierce a derby rivalry as any on our planet (as well as Pluto, I suspect) -- regardless of how the Mackems and Magpies are faring in any particular season. But the stakes are especially high for this red-hot meeting at the Stadium of Light, because Sunderland presently lie a buoyant sixth and Newcastle a similarly decent eighth. And then there is the first-round meeting to consider: Toon, then still under the luckless Chris Hughton, emerged 5-1 victors to my eternal glee. Kevin Nolan got to do his funky chicken dance three times! You can imagine this hasn’t sat well among Black Cats fans ... revenge is uppermost on their minds. Heart over head for this one, of course, I can’t bring myself to suggest the Sunderland win, though. Sean and Dominic can’t concur, and deep down I do understand their choice ...

Rob: Sunderland 2 Newcastle 2
Garrin: 1-1
Ray: 1-1
David: 2-2
Dominic: 1-0
Guest Sean Dundee: 1-0
Last season: Not applicable

THE DESPERATE DUEL

LIVERPOOL v EVERTON
Sunday, 16:05

Sorry, all you Scousers: I just could not resist cheekily putting the Merseyside derby in this slot, even if 12th and 13th on the table respectively (Everton a whisker in front on goal difference) doesn’t automatically suggest a truly dire state of affairs for either club. That said, both are only four points clear of the drop zone, so if there’s to be a loser on Sunday afternoon that team could be flirting with proper peril again. My tip is a fractious stalemate, alongside Toffees devotee Garrin, although former Anfielder Sean leads a posse of tipsters venturing a heartening win for King Kenny’s under-the-cosh troops.

Rob: Liverpool 0 Everton 0
Garrin: 1-1
Ray: 2-0
David: 2-0
Dominic: 1-0
Guest Sean Dundee: 2-0
Last season: 1-0

LEADERBOARD

We’ve moved comfortably past the midway point of the season after another batch of ridiculously busy festive-season activity in the Premiership ... and Dominic, I’m afraid, seems to have a fairly solid foothold at the top of the pile. He stands nine points clear of yours truly after a double round of games, although my comfort at present is a 15-point gap over third-placed David. He, in turn, is full of fresh life and bluster after hauling himself off the basement slot at last. It’s Garrin among the dead men, though admittedly not by much ...

148 Dominic (13 points from last two rounds)
139 Rob (8)
124 David (10)
123 Garrin (7)
