Evra blamed for handshake row

2012-03-08 17:00

Liverpool - Liverpool defender Glen Johnson reignited the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra handshake row on Thursday by accusing the Manchester United player of engineering the dispute.

Forward Suarez, banned for eight matches for racially abusing Evra in October, refused to shake the Frenchman's hand before Liverpool's Premier League encounter with United last month. He subsequently apologised after widespread condemnation.

Left back Evra had extended his hand to the Uruguayan who ignored it and carried on walking but England right back Johnson questioned whether the United defender had made a genuine attempt to shake hands in the first place.

"Evra was clever at Old Trafford," Johnson told the Daily Mail newspaper.

"Because - I'm not being funny - but if I wanted to shake your hand I would stick it right out in front of me. But if my hand is down, almost by my side, then it's because I really don't want to shake your hand."

Johnson added Evra had "probably stayed up all night thinking about how to do that".

"Luis didn't shake his hand because Evra's hand was down there. What else is Luis supposed to do? Would you go to shake someone's hand if their hand is way down there by their side? (Of) course not," he said.

"But then, because Luis didn't do it, Evra has pulled him back by his arm as he walked on, as if to say to everybody: 'Look, I wanted to shake his hand and he didn't'."

Johnson's comments come several weeks after English soccer's two most successful clubs and bitter rivals sought to draw a line under the initial row with United accepting Liverpool's apologies.

Really, what a lame excuse! We all saw the incident broer.

      Stormkaap - 2012-03-08 18:15

And so what did u see! The grab after the fact..

      Selwyn - 2012-03-08 18:38

      Shoosh - 2012-03-08 19:12

@magomarele - did you see the 'handshake' ? it was exactly as Johnson says, I also asked the question as to who was to blame as well as the Rio Ferdinand handshake snub, as expected there were no supportive comments. @Selwyn - & just how does this have any bearing on Liverpool's league position or are you just stirring?

      Bob - 2012-03-09 13:19

Johnson has got this dead right, the despicable little runt Evra is just a trouble mking little git, I detest the man, he is always crying about something, in the meantime he is the real stirrer. Suarez should have given him a Liverpool kiss then he would have really had something to cry about. Selwyn I think you are a scum utd supporter, get over it, your club never has been and never will be as great as LFC, end of story.

Haha...\stayed up all night thinking about it\ Typical Liverpool Glen,we stay awake at night thinking about our 19 (yes NINETEEN!) titles and how to add to that total...maybe u guys should concentrate on this as well...been a while since u guys won a title, has'nt it? GGMU

      David - 2012-03-09 08:36

Yep. Just a couple of weeks ago. You guys got anything yet this year or still living in the past.

      Bob - 2012-03-09 13:21

David, the scum have won nothing this year that I'm aware of, long may it continue, the just carry on about their 19 titles, what are they gowing to crow about when LFC overtake them on that, tossers.

  • Hanno Van Helsdingen - 2012-03-08 18:51

Agree. Evra did not hold out his hand. Both guys need to put it behind them.

      Shoosh - 2012-03-08 19:15

@Hanno - at last some else with the balls to say it how it is/was.

  • phillip.crossley - 2012-03-08 19:51

What I saw was Evra trying to stop Suarez from shaking the next persons hand. He wasn't pulling Suarez's arm to try and shake it, he didn't offer his hand in the first place. Suarez should have been the bigger man by shaking his hand anyway and saying sorry and moving on. Evra would have been seen as the idiot he is.

  • Lynda - 2012-03-09 11:08

Evra milked this situation for all it was worth, one just has to look at the way he carried on in front of the crowd at the end of the match to realise that it was all very carefully engineered. I am not a Suarez fan but Evra has really fallen in my eyes!

      Bob - 2012-03-09 13:27

Lynda, the man is a despicable excuse for a man, he antagonises his opposition until they retaliate then he goes and crys to everyone that will listen until finally, in this case, he managed to get Suarez banned for 8 games, his last 3 attempts to get players in trouble for alledged abuse were unsuccessful.

What is wrong with these loserfools? Their players are accussed of racism, the coach supports the accussed players, their golakeeper is accussed of racism in his own country in an ad. And now it is this stupid Johnson going on about Evra. They should be concentrating on playing soccer than on a race, no wonder why they are languishing in the 7th place because they have changed focus from playing soccer to playing races.

      dion.chinnaiah - 2012-03-09 14:13

LOL sure seems like it hey?! LOL

  • dion.chinnaiah - 2012-03-09 14:12

@BOB ManU not as great as LFC? Stop smoking that s### man! You guys have only just narrowly won the Carling Cup (first cup in 6 years, mind you). Stop drawing on LFC's distant past achievements!

      Bob - 2012-03-09 14:28

Dion, distant past achievements are called history, history is what decides who or what you are or what you have achieved, in terms of cups LFC and the scum are fairly equal, in terms of greatness, decided on supporters, past managers, achievements and many more factors, then Liverpool FC have no equal, they are the greatest club in the history of football.

      Zaheer - 2012-03-09 18:56

i fully agree with Dion! you f***n LFC supporters keep bringing up history. maybe we should watch LFC on the History channel.... you are a bunch of sad mofos...

  • Sharmilen - 2012-03-09 17:59

Glen Johnson is a his followers!!! The racism issue has been dealt with and he pops up like a crying baby now and makes remarks. Where was he after the incident was being smahed all over the place? Rather than concentrating on getting his team into a position to qualify for a CL place he would rather waste his energy on this. To all you LFC supporters well done on winning the Carling Cup. Let us now see if you can challenge for the big one...EPL. Bob, overtake Utd's 19 titles...hahahahahaha you got be kidding man. LFC the Greatest Club in the football history???? Huh where did you get that from? Guess your IQ is about the same as the number of titles your wonderful team have won. Agree with you though that history defines who you are......what is Utd's 19 titles...History or 19 BITTER PILLS you lot can't swallow? You talk about greatness measured by supporters, past managers and achievements - half of LFC supporters don't even know that KD was an ex player and they think that Graeme Souness was one of their managers!!!! Past managers - I would take it you are referring to Paisley and Shankly here - well their combined afforts dont even come anywhere close to what Sir Alex has won!!! Past achievements - what are you referring to have won trophies...could it be that you lot got English teams banned from Europe after the Heysel stadium disaster (would that be an achievement for you?)!! Confirming that hooligans are stupid as well!!!
