Cape Town - Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton has guaranteed supporters they will finish above rivals Manchester City next season.
City will win the English Premier League title if they beat West Ham at home on Sunday.
United, meanwhile, have endured a torrid season and are languishing in seventh spot on the overall log.
It's been their worst season in years and led to the recent sacking of manager David Moyes, who succeeded the retired Alex Ferguson.
But Charlton, a director at United, has assured fans things will be different next season, the BBC Sport website reports.
"Next year I guarantee that we will be number one in Manchester. We like to be first and we will be first," Charlton reportedly said at United's player of the year awards earlier this week.
He also said whoever replaces Moyes will be given significant funds to spend.
Ryan Giggs is the caretaker manager until the end of the season, but Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal is the favourite for the new job.
