Carvalho wanted by Wenger

Cape Town - William Carvalho is being lined up for a move to Arsenal as Arsene Wenger looks to add steel to the heart of his midfield.

According to the Independent, Arsene Wenger has identified Portugal's William Carvalho as his top midfield target after a move for Sami Khedira seems to have stalled.

Wenger has pleased fans with his desire to spend big in the transfer window and reports in Portugal suggest that the French manager has authorised a £24 million offer for Sporting Lisbon's Carvalho.

Carvalho is the perfect addition to the Arsenal team with the player being identified as one of the top young players in Europe. The 22-year-old midfielder played a bit part role in Portugal's World Cup campaign in Brazil.

"Who's next? I don't know," Wenger said when asked about possible new arrivals.

Wenger played his cards close to his chest when quizzed about any further signings ahead of the new season.

"There could still be one signing, maximum of two. If a good opportunity comes up we might still do it, but at the moment we are not close to signing anybody."
