Cardiff snatch point at Hull

Hull - Premier League new boys Hull and Cardiff shared the points in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the KC Stadium on Saturday.

The home team had hopes of taking all three points when defender Curtis Davies gave them a first-half lead, but a spirited second-half showing from the visitors was capped by a Peter Whittingham equaliser

Deadline day signing Peter Odemwingie was on the bench for Cardiff while fellow new signing Kevin Theophile-Catherine made the starting line-up, but experienced captain Craig Bellamy was rested.

Hull keeper Allan McGregor recovered from a groin problem which kept him from Scotland duty this week to take his place in goal.

Steve Bruce's men started brightly, and visiting goalkeeper Joe Lewis had to be at his best to stop striker Sone Aluko opening the scoring.

Tigers forward Danny Graham had the chance to end his goal drought from the rebound, but put his shot well over the crossbar.

The visitors battled to get themselves into the game, but were getting little change from the well-marshalled home defence and it was no surprise when the Tigers went ahead.

Former Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone started the move with a rasping long-range drive which Lewis could only palm behind.

The Bluebirds failed to deal with the resultant corner and defender Davies turned the ball goal-wards for his first goal in four years.

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay brought on striker Nicky Maynard for the second half, and his positive move paid quick dividends as the visitors took the initiative.

They hauled themselves level in the 59th minute when Aron Gunnarson's pinpoint cross was converted expertly by long-serving midfielder Whittingham.

Gunnarson himself should have completed the turn-around when a superb cross found him unmarked six-yards from goal, but his mistimed header was off target.

The referee was next to deny the visitors a second goal when he waved away Don Cowie's claim that he had been taken out in the box.

But as the game entered its final phase, the momentum swung once again as the home side pushed for a winner.

They had the ball in the net when Aluko converted Stephen Quinn's assist, but the linesman correctly ruled him offside.
