Arsenal secure Squillaci

London - France defender Sebastian Squillaci has agreed a three-year deal to join Arsenal from Spanish club Sevilla, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

"We needed a centre back of quality and experience and at the right price - he was all of that," Wenger said at his news conference on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Squillaci, who made his name with Lyon, will not face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, however, as minor details of the transfer have to be finalised.

Arsenal have been thin at the back with Sol Campbell, William Gallas, Philippe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre all leaving while the versatile Johan Djourou is injured.

"He is a real defender and is good in the one against one, good in the air and can score goals on set-pieces as well. I believe he will be suited to the English game," Wenger said of Squillaci.

Thank you Prof Wenger; Now all that is left is a good goalkeeper, and a cover for Alex Song [central defensive mid], then the Gunners are flying all the way to the trophies on offer!!

Arsenal are no longer an English club. They are now French, thanks to their multitude of French players and their whinging French manager. They should rename the club to "Le Arse". They suck anyway and will go a sixth season without a trophy.

Thanks for your words of wisdom Malcolm. Let me guess - you support some other fully English run club in the top six. Would you like to name them? Pratt!

Did I say Arsenal are fully French? How many English players does Arsenal have? I shout for Man United and Tottenham and they both have a healthy amount of English players. Both clubs' managers are British! Arsenal are now a French team, and just like the national team they cant win silverware!

Nice one Julian, and i bet he doesn't even know which end of England they play in.

A step in the right direction. Anyone can by the trophy, although Man City is still battling with the concept. Please, can we not have a better goalkeeper? Forgive Malcolm must be a ManU fan!

@Malcolm. They play beautiful football, far much better than the English clubs. That is why English national team will never win anything in the European and World Cups. They failed dismally on their recent trip to South Africa with their useless Fabio Capello who Jose Mourinho has rightly pointed to be a failure also.

  • Billy - 2010-08-27 09:39

@malcolm & Julian- Please admit that Arsenal play the best footbll in the EPL and make some constructive criticism. Pls tell us which teams u support. Hope fully not Man U cause they Suck with a Capital S

Arsenal is a club that buys carefully - buy low / sell high, competes for trophy's every year, plays beautiful football, employs players from Europe, the Americas + Africa is financially very successful and one of the most popular teams in the world. To moan about the number of british players in the team is 10 years out of date and a shows a narrow view of the evolution of the EPL. Up the Gunners!!

Arsene Wenger is a genius, he develops young players into stars...(i.e: Fabregas, Nasri) He has a future goal in mind, not always right now... If he wants french players, let him use french players.. Clearly it's working in his favour and no one has stopped him and until there is a rule stating you can't have them in your side he will continue to use whatever nationality he wants... And from what I can remember, Alex Ferguson is an obnoxious, self-righteous pratt himself!

  • @Kevin - 2010-08-27 13:25

I couldn't have said it better myself!

  • Savimbi - 2010-08-28 05:09

Wenger is a good manager unfortunately he will never win anything with the players he has.Soccer is business and is about money and Arsenal in only making a lot of money by selling their star players and in return he is not buying quality players to compete with the likes of Man United, Chelsea,Man City and were humiliated by Barcelona. It is very easy to beat Arsenal if you close their middle field they wont move but if dont close them they will punish you

arsenal has a young side and they have now matured both mentally and physically, the time has now come for them to win trophies and 2010/11 is our time, wenger is the boss
