Arsenal lose out on Vermaelen clause

Cape Town - Barcelona's triumph over Juventus in Berlin on Saturday was set to bring an added bonus £2.9 million for Premier League giants, Arsenal.

The Gunners were set to earn £2.9m due to a clause in the sale contract for defender Thomas Vermaelen, who joined the Catalan giants last summer.

In terms of the agreement, Barcelona would be liable to pay Arsenal the fee should they win the Champions League.

London Standard have now revealed that Barcelona, however, will not have to make the payment as Vermaelen did not feature in the competition for Barcelona, meaning the clause in the contract will be not be enforced.

The Belgian made just one appearance all season for Luis Enrique's treble-winning side.
