Allardyce hails 'quality' Downing

Cape Town - West Ham manager Sam Allardyce believes that, on current form, there is no better midfielder in the Premier League than Stewart Downing.

Downing has become an increasingly influential player since his arrival from Liverpool in August 2013 and was once again at the forefront as the Hammers beat QPR 2-0 on Saturday.

It was a performance that garnered glowing praise from Allardyce, who made no secret of his admiration of the 30-year-old.

"I don't think there is anybody playing in midfield that is better than Stewart Downing," said Allardyce.

"He was my man of the match against QPR. The confidence is growing again in Stewart and he's showing his quality."

Downing hasn't featured for England since May 2012 when he made a substitute appearance in a friendly against Norway, but Allardyce believes he should be in the reckoning for another run with the Three Lions.

"I think so but that is another choice for Roy Hodgson," added Allardyce.

"The quality of Stewart Downing was a major factor why we beat QPR.

"The amount of ball we can get to him in that position in midfield, in a diamond, has been fantastic for him and for us."
