Yarm - England midfielder Stewart Downing has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that the Liverpool player was arrested after allegedly hitting his ex-girlfriend in a nightclub fight.

When asked about the report, Cleveland Police would only say that "a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault."

Downing is 27.

Police say officers in northeast England were "called to an incident at a pub on Yarm High Street shortly before 1 am" on Sunday, and added that a 32-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assault.

Both people remained in police custody on Sunday while the investigation continued.

Liverpool did not respond to requests for comment.

Yarm is near Middlesbrough, where Downing used to play.

What the hell is going on at Liverpool? Seems the club has lost control over its players and supporters!

Liverpool is a club full of common people(staff and fans). Their top signing, Suarez, had just came off a couple of matches' ban at his previous club for biting another player(live to millions on TV). All these scandals do not shock me.

Wow! A broad sweeping statement about millions of people based on a few incidents. Nice. An interesting thing about the Suarez biting incident was that it was, as you said, caught on camera and free of any ambiguity. Contrast this to another recent incident. Makes you think hey? If it doesn't - just give a thumb down.

I meant the fans on the stands. Liverpool has a darker history of hooliganism than the other big clubs
