Welbeck to learn fate for alleged dive

Cape Town - Arsenal's Danny Welbeck is set to learn on Monday whether or not he will face retrospective action for an alleged dive during Thursday's 3-1 win over AC Milan.

The Gunners had gone into the game 2-0 up on aggregate, but fallen behind on the night due to a Hakan Calhanoglu opener. Welbeck restored the two-goal aggregate lead by winning and converting a 39th minute penalty after what was deemed a foul from Ricardo Rodriguez.

The 27-year-old scored again late on after Granit Xhaka had put Arsenal ahead on the night, putting the cherry on top as Arsenal progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they will face CSKA Moscow.

However, Sky Sports reported on Friday that UEFA's disciplinary body was looking into incidents from Thursday's fixtures and could potentially punish Welbeck for diving.

Speaking after the match on the incident which could land Welbeck in trouble, Arsene Wenger said: "I haven't seen it again. I will watch it again and give my honest feeling about it. I will give him my honest feeling about it as well (if I view it as a dive), don't worry.

"There's two things: was it a penalty or not? I don't know. The Italian players were unhappy with it. I can understand that, because I don't really know what it was."

Opposition boss Gennaro Gattuso's criticism of the former Manchester United starlet was cryptic. "I don't want to talk about the referee," he told reporters after the match, according to Goal. "We can't find any alibi or (blame) bad luck.

"He (Welbeck) is a striker. He has to do what he does, but we can't use that as entire influence of English football.

"There is a great deal of fair play in English football. I'm not going to judge."
