Muller unhappy with being benched

Cape Town - Thomas Muller has expressed his frustration at not making Bayern's starting XI in Wednesday night's Champions League semi-final clash with Atletico Madrid.

Bayern Munchen manager Pep Guardiola's decision not to hand a start to Muller has been met with much criticism from club's supporters and the press.

The player himself, while diplomatic, also weighed in on the topic, revealing his disappointment at the decision.

"I try to cope with it professionally," Muller told reporters after the match. "It does not make you happy, but it's important to realise what is important for the team.

"If everyone who sits on the bench just flips, we can forget about the season."

Muller has scored eight Champions League goals in as many starts for the current Bundesliga champions, his last coming in the quarter-finals against Benfica.

The 26-year-old did make his appearance in the 70th minute, but could not help his team score that crucial away-goal.

Former Bayern coach Ottmat Hitzfeld expressed his astonishment at Guardiola's decision when speaking to Sky Sports after the match.

"Muller for Bayern is what Messi is for Barcelona. It is nearly impossible to replace them in the all-important matches."

Atlético's Saul Niguez netted the match's only goal in the 11th minute after a mesmerising solo run through the visitors' defence.

The Spanish league hopefuls travel to Munich next Tuesday for the second leg of their semi-final tie.
