Joel Matip ruled out of Salzburg clash

Cape Town - Liverpool will have to make do without the services of defender Joel Matip for the clash with RB Salzburg on Wednesday.

Kick-off is at 21:00 (SA time).

The Reds kept their 100% Premier League winning run going at Sheffield United on Saturday lunchtime, but it appears to have come at a price.

Matip picked up a knock and could now miss the Champions League clash with RB Salzburg at Anfield in Group E.

Xherdan Shaqiri remains sidelined with a calf injury, while the game also comes too soon for goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has his own calf issues.

Klopp said: "Joel Matip obviously got a slight knock at Sheffield, we have to see how exactly it will be.

"Apart from that, everybody should be fine. Of course, we have the players who weren't available last week - that means Shaq is still out; Alisson is very close but for sure not for tomorrow. I think that's it pretty much."

Klopp said the reigning Champions League holders were in good spirits ahead of the clash as they go looking for their first win in this season's competition following their opening defeat to Napoli.

Meanwhile, Reds ace Sadio Mane says he will be putting his affection for Salzburg to one side when the two sides meet as there is no room for sentimentality in the game.

Mane was with the Austrians for over two years before he moved on to Southampton back in 2014.

"Of course, it's a special game for me. I was playing there for two-and-a-half years and now I'm going to play against them," he said.

"They will be ready for me and I will be ready for them as well. I love the city and the club - before and still now. I will be really happy to meet my ex-teammates, but at the same time, I would love to win against them."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
