Dortmund battle past Sporting

Cape Town - Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in a Group F clash at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel's side shaded the early exchanges, as shots from Pulisic and Julian Weigl threatened Rui Patricio's goal.

In the 12th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock when Ginter sent in a superb cross into the box and Ramos' pin-point header into the top right corner left Patricio beaten.

The goal seemed to galvanise Dortmund, although the visitors threatened 15 minutes later when Gelson Martins nearly controlled a defense-splitting pass.

With 10 minutes to go in the half, Pulisic once again had his sights on goal and this time his rasping shot rattled against the crossbar with Patricio once again beaten.

In first-half injury-time Guerreiro nearly doubled the hosts' lead when he was unmarked in the box, but his shot sailed inches wide of the left post.

After the break, BVB continued to have the better of the chances, although they had to wait until the 76th minute for their next genuine effort. Andre Schurrle's curling shot from just outside the box seemed destined for the bottom right corner, although the Sporting stopper came to his team's rescue with a diving save.

Bryan Ruiz had a late chance to hand Sporting an unlikely draw, but he had to watch on in agony as his header from close range sailed harmlessly over the bar.
