UEFA offers Liverpool hope

Nyon -  UEFA says it will do its utmost to avoid forcing Liverpool to play a Champions League match on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough stadium tragedy.

Liverpool has asked UEFA to ensure it plays the second leg of the quarterfinals on April 14 and not the next night.

It was on April 15, 1989, that 96 Liverpool fans were crushed in a fenced-in standing area of the Sheffield stadium where Liverpool was playing Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semifinals.

Liverpool has never played a match since on the Hillsborough anniversary.

UEFA president Michel Platini said on Monday he is aware of the importance of the anniversary and fully sympathized with Liverpool's feelings.

The Champions League draw is on Friday.

Fair and valid reason, and respect from a Man U fan. Now that I did my nice deed for the day, I do hope you know that somewhere you will be meeting us in the Quarters. Be afraid, be very very afraid.

wasnt the 1-4 score enough to show who is indeed the better team, well generally people refer to the league table to see who the better team is. Unfortunately for the Liverpool supporters who are deperate to cling onto anything since they last won the league in the 1989/1990 season, one result does not make a season, no matter what it is. At the end of the day, its the silverware that counts.

I'm a Man United supporter (as you all know by now). But I find it disgusting that you are still ranting about beating United 4 -1 at Old Trafford this past Saturday on this topic that is totally unrelated. This is about showing respect for the people that died in the Hillsborough disaster. This clearly shows that you have no idea of what happened, and you claim to be Liverpool supporters. Not cool. It's sad to see people lose their lives period. But to lose it while attending a sports event makes you feel that little more sympathy towards them. We had a similar disaster at Ellis Park when Kaizer Chiefs played Orlando Pirates. Just shows how low some of you supporters can go (that includes United supporters too who are also still moaning about last weekend)... If you have something to say about that result, then do it in the appropriate thread.... I've said enough.

Anon User @ 4.58am, are you daft ? Did you even understand the article ? Hillsborough & Heysel were disasters for us at our prime - no club could stop us, but these tragic events did. Do you not realise that our last title was won in the same year as Hillsborough ? We have been rebuilding ever since. Most clubs would have fallen away into championship league football by now. But not the mighty Reds. we ARE the comeback kings & will prove in the next few years again. We have already proven the critics wrong when they said we had no chance of beating Chelsea, Manure & Real Madrid - we did DOUBLES over each of them & crushed them all. Manure fans are scared coz' they see the progress we are making each season & know it's only a matter of time before the trophy goes back, and stays, at Anfield

anon 10.02am! so if i understand you correctly the Hillsborough Tragedy caused your team to not win a premiership for 20 years??? wat BS are you talking? I know that supporters died(R.I.P) but how did it effect the players and the rest of the team? and if that team won the league that year wat rebuilding did you guys have to do......? that means that LFC took a winning formula and messed it up 20 years str8! thats not rebuilding my friend thats called Deterioration! THINK BEFORE YOU RUN YOUR MOUTH!

I'm a strong Man U fan and I suffered tremendously last weekend (no thanks to Liverpool). But come on people, UEFA shouldn't hesitate to honor Liverpool's wishes. And to all you Liverpool fans, last weekend was just a fluke. We're still gonna get the quintuple despite what Sir Alex said. Go Red Devils!!!
