LVG on Shaw injury: It's awful

Cape Town - Louis van Gaal has slammed the challenge that left Luke Shaw with a double leg fracture on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United manager revealed how Shaw, who required an oxygen mask, was crying in the dressing room after being stretchered off.

Shaw is expected to miss a minimum of four months but a longer spell on the sidelines seems more plausible.

"It’s awful." van Gaal told the club's website.

"He’s an 18-year-old boy who comes to Manchester and his first season is very difficult.

"Then he has a fantastic second season and this happens. When he came into the dressing room he had an oxygen mask and was crying."

Van Gaal says the challenge from PSV's Hector Moreno was poor and deserved a red card.

"When I say it’s a penalty and a red card, I’m a bad loser. It was a bad tackle with two legs.

"Every word I say is always interpreted in the wrong way. It was in the 16 metre and it was a very bad tackle, with two legs."

Shaw is expected to travel back to England in the next couple of days to undergo surgery.
