Gerrard hoping to surprise

Cape Town - Captain Steven Gerrard has urged his Liverpool teammates to take inspiration from the 2009 triumph over Real Madrid when they face the Spanish giants at Anfield in the Champions League tonight.

Gerrard scored twice in the 4-0 thrashing of Madrid last time around and the skipper is hoping to repeat the same level of performance tonight. The Reds are back in Europe's elite competition once again after sitting out for four seasons, and are determined to do well on the European stage once more.

"Everyone knows what this club is about and its history and it is very important we keep Champions League football here for as long as we can," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"It is nights like that which live with you forever; when giants like Real Madrid come into town and you manage to perform really well and get a good result they are fantastic memories".

Liverpool have won just one game from two in the group stages so far after narrowly beating Ludogorets 2-1 and then going 1-0 down to Basel, but Gerrard believes tonight's game is all about enjoying the experience.

"This is almost like a bonus game for us - a game we need to enjoy - but I've been around for a long time and I know you only enjoy nights like this when you put in a good performance as a team and we are hoping we surprise and shock a few people tomorrow".
