Munich - Bayern Munich's Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez has returned to team training on Wednesday some eight months after suffering a serious knee injury.
"It's just fantastic! I'm overjoyed," Martinez told Bayern Munich television FCB.tv after the session.
Martinez said his first day back was "only the first step," adding: "I know I have a lot of work ahead of me yet."
Martinez, 26, tore cruciate ligaments in his left knee during the German Super Cup match against Borussia Dortmund in mid-August 2014.
He underwent surgical repair in Vail, Colorado, before starting rehabilitation exercises.
Martinez would give coach Pep Guardiola fresh options in midfield or defence towards the end of the season.
The German champions are in the Champions League semi-finals for a fourth successive season following their 6-1 victory over Porto in Munich Wednesday.
They are also in the German Cup semi-finals and close to winning a third successive league title.
"I hope I can pick up a few minutes' playing time very soon," Martinez said.
