Calls for SAFA to start acting

Johannesburg - The SA Football Association (SAFA) must account to the public for Bafana Bafana's dismal performances, the Azanian People's Organisation said on Tuesday.

"Football is a national asset, and therefore needs to be publicly scrutinised on who should be in leadership," spokesperson Thole Somdaka said in statement.

"If football, our main sporting code, is to truly belong to the nation, we must have some public accountability by SAFA, not only on finances, but on programmes and how such programmes assist this organisation in performing," he said.

AZAPO's statement follows the sacking of Pitso Mosimane as the national team's coach.

Somdaka also spoke about the Transnet School of Excellence, which was on the "brink of collapse". He said SAFA was doing nothing to remedy the situation.

He said leadership squabbles within SAFA were hampering development in South African soccer.

"The main cause of the all squabbles is not the development of football, but access to bonuses [and] car allowances. " "This excess is used for bribing, nepotism, and suppressing dissent within SAFA," he said.
