CT Stadium 'no white elephant'

Cape Town - Cape Town City bosses have once again emphatically denied suggestions that the Cape Town Stadium is a white elephant, insisting that the 2010 Soccer World Cup showpiece will be utilised more frequently in the coming months.

According to the EWN website, to date, apart from a handful of concerts, church gatherings and Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches, the 55 000-seater stadium does not host events on a regular basis.

The city's Grant Pascoe said the stadium has not yet reached a stage of desperation just as yet.

“We are working behind the scenes to get this absolutely right. It is not like we are desperate to host (events). There are many events that are being lined up at this time but we are also working towards a strategy.”

Grant said future plans will focus on the long-term sustainability of the stadium, and not short-term gain.

Plans to move Western Province and Stormers matches from Newlands to the Cape Town Stadium have to date failed to reach fruition.
